Forumites,
What is the best way to coat a carbon mast? I cant afford to varnish it. Would a bit of black paint work? If so what is the best stuff to use
Cheers,
Alex

White paint is good as it doesn't absorb much heat and light.

I used to ask around at my club and and most people would have some varnish spare and will be willing to give me some!

It needs to be decent stuff or else it won't adhere properly and just peel off.

It is... I think... well its UV protecting and hasn't peeled off in the last 3 months, so it must be ok!?

Just fork out the cash and varnish it. Its not worth skimping on it. If your insistant on painting it ,i'd paint it white with some form of two pot paint

How about this for those on a budget:

Probably won't last that long and will need frequent recoating but will probably be better than leaving it untreated. My 14 mast is painted white because, as said previously, I think thats the best colour for protection from UV etc etc.

Don't be a tightwad.  If you're sailing a 14, splash out on some varnish.  The stuff to use is 2 pack International Perfection, 7 times the UV rsistance of the standard stuff.

Alternatively, paint it black, devalue your boat, and have the mast get warm from the black paint absorbing the heat...

Doesn't that happen with varnish too? I can't imagine the varnish blocking a lot of infra red...
