You could use a hull number that isn't even a class Assoc no. Only two digits would be enough, but heigh will be smaller than sail no. But unlike the anpr camera the angle will still be pretty crappy. Anpr camera is usually high and steep angle. Hiding behind arctic not easy. Worst that happens on a toll is the loose £5 or whatever. I don't know if there is a barrier to control access...

Bow numbers might work on a GP but the low freeboard and well raked bow on a Laser would make it hard enough for a human to decipher never mind AI...

The photo is a rounding, no wonder it's confused. LOL

I've run a fair few races and I really can't remember the last time I couldn't decipher sail numbers at the finish of a club race, AI can do a better job of recognising stuff than I can.

The point was more that when the boats are heeled towards the observer/camera any hull numbers are invisible and sail numbers are not always clearly readable., the boat would only be within the capture of the camera for a short time  so no reliable guarantee of hull or sail numbers being sufficiently visible during that time. When a human observer is recording a boat's finish they can track the boat for long enough to be sure of the sail number, ANPR only has a very short window of opportunity.

Lets drop ANPR and talk about "Target Tracking" software. I believe once this gizzmo has identified something it tracks it and hangs on to it.

I was really thinking "was it possible" and I think, fairly positively yes it is. It may only be possible by throwing large amount of money at it....but it is possible.

Having established that it is possible.....is it possible to trim the costs with a few compromises.

My point was: It is now possible to create a complete system that needs nothing more than pointing in the right direction and a button pushed. Whether it's economically practical to do it is another question.

It would be an interesting experiment to try it out.  Thumbs Up and as you say cost may well be prohibitive.

It is all very well having 18 pages of what could be done and what Clubs are currently trying.

If you are seriously talking about streamlining race timings it needs to be a National standard and not random piecemeal solutions.

Surely though this is something that the RYA could useful throw some weight behind to benefit all Clubs from grass roots to major commercial setups. A standard system to opt into. Use the benefit of scale to get unit costs of any equipment down to a minimum. Also improve the PY system by having all results automatically fed into it.

Not the same but Golf after having about five regional systems has now adopted a worldwide handicap and scoring system. All players are registered, all courses are rated for difficultly so that your home club handicap can be adjusted if you go and play at a easier or harder course, there is even a way to enter a loading for severe adverse conditions.
