So you mean that the 'old duffers' that Polc mentioned won't have to come down to the sailing club to socialise, and incidentally run races for the competitors? |

By far the fastest means of finishing lots of handicap boats is currently to have one person calling the sail numbers over the line and clicking a stopwatch which saves times, while someone else records those sail numbers and what order they crossed.
What do we do from there? Do we use the log of times to write them next to each boat and then type them in, or do we try and add sail numbers to the times and import the lot into sailwave. If you had to give it to your grandma to do, which would you pick? Or is there an easier way im missing?

Yes, shortly after the start of the race, take the sign-on sheet and based on the knowledge of the people sailing and the weather conditions write out the finishing order. Next post the results on the noticeboard and return to the bar. There's no need to wait for the race to finish first. About an hour later, go out to the race hut, raise the shortened course flag and then randomly press the finishing hooter for the next 15 minutes or so. Return to the bar and listen to the chat to find out if any corrections are needed. It won't be hard to find out. Anyone who has finished above their normal place in the club pecking order will be loudly celebrating this, and anyone who capsized and lost a few places will be describing every detail of how they got the tiller extension stuck in their lifejacket, mast stuck in the mud etc. In most clubs, most of the time, not very many corrections to the results will be required...... In all seriousness though, for club racing it is an awful lot easier to do the results if you write the names into the race sheet in the order which you expect them to finish rather than the order in which people sign on, in numerical order or anything else, |

Our race control system lets you save finishing times by pressing a button, you still need to record finishing order, if you miss a time or a boat crossing the line you might have 22 boats and 21 or 23 times. No method is foolproof...

My blue-sky thinking would be, if you want to race then each boat owner should buy their own tracker with encoded ID (it shouldnt be the clubs responsibility or cost to them) and is registered permanantly to the boat. Each tracker is fitted to the bow. Finish lines have sensors at each end - simple devices. All linked back to a Race Control laptop type device (screen type same as a Kindle for sunlight reading). Real time tracking for each boat, finish results are automatic
And then I woke up.....

You see, I think this makes far more sense in terms of the OP than anything else. A connected race hut may help speed up information flow to a results sheet and on to the PYAG, but doesn't appear to do anything for accuracy or duty numbers. If a small tracker can be accurate to maybe 1/2 a boat length, then we would get decent racing, and a good bar game after. |

if you make them have a high powered rfid tag and a reciever on a finishing mark they have to round then that could be possibel i guess Chris... seems expensive though and potetnially unreliable in hardware.

Yes this is what are achieving already, trackers on all the boats, finish line defined by trackers or pinged by App System records the time each boat crosses the line, with lap count and corrected time calculated automatically, chance to manually reconcile to other sources Accuracy 2m and interestingly if all boats are using the same design of tracker the relative accuracy is much better

Yes, pretty much as I was thinking
Maybe expensive, maybe not. Volume = lower cost
