if you can’t keep a 24/7 watch you should not be out there at the speeds these guys are going. This race and similar need to be banned.

Even if they were able to keep 24hr watch they couldn't reduce the risk that much. A lot of the time it's dark, and/or the sea is rough, an old freezer or a container lying just awash is pretty much invisible till you hit it.

Regardless of thinking such events should be banned as Tink says.
Or that keeping a watch would make little difference at top speed in the dark as PeterG. It is hard to argue that such events and style of sailing is the practice of good seamanship.

Pure bad luck to find something to hit in millions of square miles.

God, you lot sound so old and doddery. Should be banned... I guess all extreme sports should be banned, then? Downhill anything, mountaineering, climbing, pretty much anything along those lines?

Well, I didn't say it should be banned, I'm pretty much live and let live.
What I do say though is that I personally am not particularly impressed by the current crop.

Having had some close passes on semi-submerged containers with a 3 person watch on deck plus me as skipper I can absolutely say that keeping a 24/7 watch is larger irrelevant to the UFO issue. Most of the Vendee route is in water that is not frequented, and where it is it is by ships with active AIS. I’d be much more worried about unlit fishing vessels in the Sound of Sleet (another real example) than I would be as A VG skipper on anything but the approaches to land.

Hmm ... I thought Jean Le Cam displayed exemplary seamanship skills and wouldnt be surprised if Macron gave him some form of gong - I am sure Kevin would be pleased ..... ;-)
Vestas (no foils) in the VOR had a full crew and still managed to hit a stationary and rather hard bit of land... ;-) |

Granted, this particular proposed RTW venture seems rather foolhardy and ill thought out. - https://globalsolochallenge.com

And a shout out to someone who epitomises the spirit of this race - Pip Hare. Who wouldnt fall in love with her, admire and aspire to her after watching this video she posted from a very different Southern Ocean yesterday:
