I expect all the boats that were diverted on the search will get redress but it is going to be hard to work out who is where until they finish.

I have not followed this race before but the website Official website of the Vendée Globe - Vendée Globe - En (vendeeglobe.org) is very good with a mass of info and interesting daily bulletins.

I'd imagine there will be time allowance for all the boats who were called to the scene. But even if there wasnt, of course they would go. It's not only part of the ethos of the race, but part and parcel of maritime heritage and, I think, law.

The redress last time was when Jean Le Cam lost his keel and was recused by Vincent Riou. Riou damaged his boat in the rescue and was reinstated to 3rd.

The Vendee has a history of breakages. Statistically, the average number of finishers over its history is about 50% - so it isnt just down to the current generation. PRB is actually an older gen boat - tho fitted with foils.

Its a bit premature to say the least to put it down to 'this batch' until various post-mortems have been done (and HB is in back in the shed)

F1 cars are built for one purpose only and as light as they can be, and they dont always last the race either ... and they only have to go round and round a few miles of circuit. If you wanna be in the game, calculated risk taking is part of it.

And lets not forget, Jean Le Cam himself - todays rescue hero - was himself rescued from Cape Horn in the 2008/9 race in what we would now call an old generation 'safer' boat

He should get redress.

Think that happened many ago when someone got bumped up to second or third after redress.

Clearly many of this batch of boats are not up to the job. The oceans are a big place they can't all have hit a shipping container or other large debris (twice in Hugo Boss' case). And they haven't even got to the serious bit yet...

Kevin Escoffier said that he had especially reinforced PRB with loads of carbon and does not regret anything in the preparation and he was amazed that it had just split in two.  His comment to race control was they need to look at how a boat like that could split in two.

I guess that they are lighter to get faster and as they get quicker the risk goes up hugely

To hear that one sank in minutes in the southern ocean is worrying

This race has always had a high attrition rate. Is this event any worse? I don't know and it may be too early to tell yet. I guess these boats are bit like F1 or WRC - built to do one job and last no longer than that.
Surely Le Cam will get time compensation for the diversion (great rescue job BTW) and will - I guess - be met by a SA Naval vessel where KE can be transferred.
