Just thought I'd pick the hive-brain......

I'm looking at bringing parts of my club up to the correct time and date zone and am looking at contactless payment.

On the face of it things look dead easy - just buy a reader, accept that there are transaction charges, load an app onto a mobile device and away you go.

Oh, but hold on a minute..... 'Load an app onto a mobile device'.
So we either have to get a whole group of people to download whatever app is compatible with whatever reader I decide on (We don't have a regular galley / onsite memberships etc team) or buy a phone and a data plan with all the associated issues of charging the device / Finding the device / losing the device / dropping the device etc etc .....
Suddenly turns a £20 solution into a £20 + Phone + Dataplan (Our WiFi is plap)

So, does anyones club use contactless and is there any system out there that may actually supply a mobile device as well (more a POS setup I guess) that anyone knows of?

With regards to the mobile requirement, doesn't a club member have an older phone they could donate. It would only need bluetooth and be reasonably up to date for the app. You could lock that in a drawer perhaps. The dataplan could be done through someone like Smarty who's cheapest plan is £6 per month for 1GB data - https://smarty.co.uk/plans/1gb-data

I assume the readers you have looked at are iZettle or Square from the prices?

Not sure you'd find a supplier who could do that for you without it being more expensive, though I'd interested if you can because our club may have exactly the same requirements.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

For pretty much any solution you are going to need something to drive it (i.e a PoS system) and internet connectivity. iZettle do a

If you have broadband into the club then a cheap tablet with the relevant app on it will do the job if not then either a 4 or 5G enabled tablet (or old phone) will work.

Then you have the job of making sure the reader is charged etc.. it sounds like a fair bit of hassle unless you have a dedicated catering team who will take ownership of it.

The other option is you allow members credit and invoice them on a weekly or monthly basis and they can then pay via BACS or something similar. This could open a whole can of worms though like how to deal with non-payers, disputes over bills etc..

If you have an on line membership payment system would it be worth considering some kind of pre payment system?

We did this. We inducted several key people (effectively those who handled our cash float) into the system on their phones and established a protocol for handing over and charging the Square reader.

Just need to grit your teach and help the technophobes along.

Yes, this may be a hassle, but it's no different to losing the keys to the galley, can't turn on the gas etc etc.

As someone said above, moving all or a substantial part of the club to cashless (particularly on-line race entry and payment) has big benefits.

Totally disagree as it’s totally unnecessary.

Working in a cash free shop, the absence of cash has only upset a tiny number of people - considerably less than 1%, I'd say. I'm assuming Grumpycat is part of that "it's legal tender you have to take it" brigade (you don't).

I know our club is discussing it, but I admit I can't help on the technical stuff. Reading with interest, though.

Contactless has been working well at Burghfield since autumn last year. A few teething problems initially, but seems to be working pretty well now. Email the Club at info@burghfieldsailing.org and I'm sure somebody in the know would be happy to respond.
