GP14 Fishing Boat

   Hi All
I have just joined the group and feel a bit of an imposter because I know nothing about sailing but I am hoping that someone could give me some advice.

I have been offered an old GP14 dinghy but would want to use it as a fishing boat on lakes and the lower reaches of the River Severn. I would either be rowing or perhaps fitting it with an electric outboard.

I would mainly be fishing alone but would need something fairly stable.

Please could anyone help or offer me any advice

	A GP14 is a pretty stable boat that was designed for 'general purpose' use (hence the name) and is happy sailed, rowed or powered by an outboard. If the boat is sound then it should do what you need just fine. However a couple of things spring mind, firstly the 'lower reaches of the Severn' and 'I know nothing about sailing' set off some alarm bells. The Severn is a powerful river and, if by 'lower reaches' you mean where it is tidal (i.e. below Gloucester), then it can be a very unfriendly environment for the inexperienced. Secondly, rowing and/or electric outboard are potentially inadequate for combatting the tides/currents you would encounter, even a good petrol outboard would only push a GP along at around 4 knots, slower than some of those currents, rowing or with an electric trolling motor you'd be lucky to make much more than half that.

	Just googled it, sounds quite daunting, perhaps ask where you are planning to launch from for advice.

	Thanks for your advice Sam.Spoons I really appreciate it Not actually sure that I would use it on The Severn at all, and if I did, it would be around Tewkesbury and Lower Avon

	TBF I'm not personally familiar with the area (though #2 sons inlaws live thereabouts) but the Bore can, apparently, trouble the weir at Tewksbury. Above that you're on more 'normal' river conditions. I'd probably go for a small petrol outboard for fishing though. And, maybe, we can tempt you to learn to sail it when the fish aren't biting?
