What is it about 40 mph ? I have been driving mainly on single carriage roads this weekend, constantly stuck behind elderly people tootling along at 40, even braking at bends you could go round at 60, why do they then accelerate like formula 1 drivers when there is a chance to overtake ?
Should be treated the same has speeding, just has dangerous.

Congratulations, you've discovered British rural A roads. If they're behind you they rush up close on the straights but you leave them miles behind after a bend. They've certainly never heard of our mantra "Change down, keep power on" to go round a bend.

As you will find out as you age, if your reaction time is not what it once was, then going slower round bends than you would have done in youth is reasonable. Accelerating up to the speed you would previously have driven at when the road is clear is also reasonable. And if you have someone impatient behind you then you're going to want to go fast when you can to delay them as little as possible.
However good manners also requires you to let people behind you who want to travel faster past you at the earliest opportunity. The lack of such good manners is widespread and found in drivers of all ages. There are no blue flags on the A281! Edited by JimC - 31 Aug 20 at 12:29pm |

My bugbear is being stuck behind the 40mph person, then reaching a 30 zone and they carry on at 40. It's like there is no awareness at all.
