The problem with that is, the eye needs to be able to reach the hooks at the bottom to tension but as it is it means I only have about 2/3 foot on the other end that attaches to the jib meaning I have to leave the jib up all the time

Replace the 3 strand rope with 3mm braided. We stitch and whip it instead of splicing. You'll have to re-whip it every couple of years so make the rope a few inches longer than you initially need. To hook the Halyard onto the teeth you need someone to stand on the handles of your trolley, if you think its up to the strain and hang backwards on the boatpark forestay, make sure there's nothing behind them (it's a bugger if the forestay snaps). Someone hooks it at same time.
Make sure it's not the copper ferrule on the wire loop getting stuck in the sheave.

Laser 2 likes a bit of rig tension so not sure about using a furling jib but if it's what you've got. It's an old hull and may not take too much tension anyway.....suck it and see.

She is all rigged all bar the shock cord. Took her out for my first sail yesterday :) great fun. Bit of a breeze at times for a single hand but over all good fun.

Always liked the look of Laser 2, but they had a lot of negative comments, class association virtually disappeared over night, never knew they did a lighter rigged version.

This was the original version, if memory serves, the Regatta type coming in to race by request. A bit like the Laser, a play boat which people race, and all the better for it.

The big loser in the "asymmetric revolution", at least in the UK, thanks to company policy or so rumour had it.

Took it out with a reef but still a little bit. Needs a little more weight to keep it flat as even the jib has a lot of power in it! First time single handing at all in anything larger than a laser radial so was a steep learning curve 😂

The first Laser II's like the Laser Fun didn't have a spinnaker Chute but it wasn't designed originally as a "Play Boat".....don't think Bethwaite designed "Play Boats" in the sense that you mean.

Quote from Bethwaites book "High Performance Sailing" where he talks about his daughter sailing Cherubs and winning several championships during the mid 70's:

"Two Years later I designed and developed the Laser II. The dynamics of this boat fall about midway between the 2 adult Tasar and the more lightly crewed two-adolescent Cherub. I was fortunate in being able to draw upon a background so rich in both innovative development  and competitive confirmation when asked to design what was clearly going to be  a very important boat"

It was the big loser in the Asymmetric revolution  though. A large international class that was trumped in the UK mainly by the RS200, a heavier and slower boat in anything greater than a F3......The subjective vagaries of fashion and marketing spin played a big part in that particular revolution.
