A little condescending to the counter points. If you're 50+, especially with underlying health issues then covid is bloody scary. If you have a nice house and garden, with a mortgage paid or almost paid off. A cushy job with good redundancy, or possibly retired. Then the motivation to stay home is pretty self serving and the sacrifice required to do so very minimal. My demographic is still more likely to die gasping for air with a noose around their neck than on a ventilator. Our mortgages aren't paid, that's if we even own a house. Redundancy pay is minimal and after starting work immediately post 2008 crash we'll have a second major recession to battle through. There is a almost zero personal gain from staying home. And yet we have, not out of personal interest but to slow the spread so that others can get the care they need. I agree with the restrictions generally. But I don't see anything wrong with calling in to question some the aspects which seem to make little sense and only add to the misery. Edited by Mozzy - 29 Apr 20 at 9:35am |

My experience of MPs is that except for a few concentrating on working for their voters, the £80k salary is just a starting point.
In fact, in 2018, the number of MPs with regular outside earnings was just under 20%. Many make large amounts of money outside parliament, but the majority don't.

Useful info, I have obviously been unlucky with the few who I have had direct interaction with. And on a more positive note- I worked at an engineering company that opened a new factory. I was stunned by the charges made to get someone to come and "cut the ribbon". Denis Skinner local MP was approached and made a polite refusal stating that he " didnt do that and that he concentrated on his MP role. I dont agree with his politics, but good to see some are concentrating on their role. |

If you're 50+, especially with underlying health issues then covid is bloody scary .... etc Many of those who might fit this category will also have faced a number of major economic recessions through the decades. Too many will have already faced their businesses failing , personal bankruptcy, handing house keys back to the lender, occasional redundancy, much higher tax rates than today and sky high interest rates and so on. They mostly survived through grit and hard work and occasionally a little luck to overcome repeated setbacks. This is life. Some may well be ‘comfortable’ today sure but many will still bear the financial scars and have no remaining ability or time to ‘make-good’. And today they are simply to be regarded collateral damage if they are unlucky to succumb to Covid-19 because the economy is revived too quickly ? .. and this would be somehow acceptable in the circumstances ? In the Spanish Flu pandemic (and there have been at least 5 lesser ones in the last 150+ years) the second (mutated) wave of the virus very disproportionally ‘took out’ those in their 20’s and 30’s – and disproportionately left most of the ‘oldies’ alone. It is abundantly obvious and clearly seen in the stats (The older generations largely escaped this second wave as they may have had some residual immunity from an earlier (and then less dangerous) related strain to the Spanish Flu virus. You cannot make assumptions about how this pandemic today may now develop either .... ‘People’ in general are vulnerable but the specifics can change and change quite rapidly. Society falls apart if one group or another is seen as ‘less important’. Sure there will have to be compromises made at some point . However loose conjecture, however unintended, that ‘divides’ people into ‘them and us’ groups does not help anyone or solve anything. My point is simple – we should keep to the rules to help others as well as ourselves. Economic damage is inevitable and most will have to face the consequences anyway now – both older and younger. There is no choice on that one. Sailing ? Of course we all want to return to some sort of normality there but patience and proportionality over timing is critical. So was there ever any actual evidence that these 'two clubs' were still encouraging members to sail during the lockdown or just the simple fact they hadn't updated their advice?

No, and he's admitted that :)
To be fair to Ian both websites indicated that the clubs were open for free sailing - this they may be as if you read the thread it's very much a matter of opinion as to whether or not its verboten. However no-one to my knowledge has at either club.
