Were you being ironic? They have their salary, pension, expenses secure for the next 5 years ... which is more than 95% of the population. And by all accounts failed in their pre-pandemic preparations ... and allowed Cheltenham, Six Nations, Bath Half. I am prepared to share the pain with everyone else, it is my social responsibility, but as I watch this unwind, I don't think that the politicians, civil servants or journalists will come out of this with any credit. None of them will feel the economic pain that the population at large will have to pay.

Not talking politics? Then don't respond to my post. Bricking it? It blocks rational thought so I hope not. Adding to your post? I didn't. |

My experience of MPs is that except for a few concentrating on working for their voters, the £80k salary is just a starting point. Add up the advisory work, the Company Directorships and After Dinner speaking and you see why they will not be affected financially by this situation

They should have been furloughed on at least 80% like everyone else whilst they're not performing the full gamut of their duties. I bet Boris, bless him, didn't get put on statutory sick pay. Edited by iGRF - 28 Apr 20 at 12:05pm |

My point was from the data on deaths you can already see some collateral and whilst not as high as the covid deaths, it could be very significant (1/5 or 1/4). In many cases this collateral could be avoidable. Hence my point about there being many spare beds which just aren't being used. Dogmatically sticking with the first set of rules the government came up with maybe isn't the way forward. And if we can see ways to reduce collateral then we should explore them. We're in this in the long run, and we can do better. Now, sailing is much further down the list. But why can't the RYA be thinking about reducing the impact on sailing simultaneously to cancer treatment clinics looking at ways they can continue? Clearly one is more important than the other, but why can't we look at both? Why just resign ourselves to it being part of the collateral damage? Sure, after four weeks people aren't dying from not sailing. But in 6 months people will be dying of the cumulative mental and physical tolls of lack of outdoor activity, lack of social contact, economic troubles etc. Refusing to even contemplate discussing reducing this collateral seems odd. Why do have to dogmatically stick to the initial rules? Why can't we review and identify area which could improve people health and quality of life going forward?

The two clubs that I was personally concerned about have updated their instructions to members since my initial post. That could well have happened anyway as I would agree that the subsequent discussion has been a little disjointed. Edited by ian.r.mcdonald - 29 Apr 20 at 9:31am |
