I've decided what I need is one of those invisibility cloaking devices beloved of the movies. I know I can get to the pond and sail safely without rescue cover and social-distanced but like everyone else am being a good boy and staying at home, pour encourager les autres. 

But also like everyone else, not sailing is frustrating the hell out of me. James Bond, Harry Potter and the Avengers all have these invisibility gadgets; who do I wave my credit card at?

It also makes me wonder how the cycling MAMILS get away with it. We can't sail partly because of safety cover, which could be provided by 2 family members in a RIB. A cyclist's safety cover is an NHS ambulance and 2 paramedics. How does this compute?

I’m not sure this is quite right. For starters everyone dies eventually, so the claim “they were going to die anyway” is perhaps better phrased as “they probably only had a few years life expectancy”. But even that isn’t true. What we know for sure is that somewhere between 50% and 80% more people are dieing than would normally be expected. It is reasonable to assume this is either directly or indirectly because of Coronavirus. And it is also reasonable to assume that the majority of extra deaths are directly linked to Coronavirus rather than people not going to hospital when they have chest pains because I doubt very much the number of admissions is down that far. If the claim that those dieing only had, say, three years left anyway then we can expect to see very low mortality rates for a few years once this pandemic is over.

Speaking personally, my wife was diagnosed with cancer 18 months ago and has been unable to work until the start of this year. She is now, as far as we know, “better” and could expect another 40 years life, except she has been declared one of the highly vulnerable group due to her ongoing medication. To me, whinging about being unable to sail shows a lack of character. She has gone through chemo, radiotherapy, surgery and takes countless pills a day. She has received no pay and no benefits in all that time. Now, feeling better, she is ready to return to work but has instead been told not to leave the house at all for 12 weeks and to stay 1m away from others in the same house. And yet I have not heard her complain as much as someone who has to go for a bike ride when they really wanted to sail.

I have considered going for a sail one evening on my local pond with some night vision assistance :-0
