Well regarding casualties, what happens to cyclists at the moment? The roads and trails are alive with them more than I've ever seen in my life, so they'll get looked after by either passers by or the ambulance service, who I should hope will be appropriately protected. So, what's stopping us, mask and gloving our rescue boat volunteers? In fact what's stopping us masking ourselves if it makes folk and or the authorities feel better about letting us go about our leisure? We pay enough for wetsuits and gloves, why not sport PPE, it's out there if you look for it. If you order now you can get a Cambridge mask for end July early August delivery. Trying to breathe through a wet mask will be akin to water boarding surely!

I've got a neoprene snowboard facemask I'm using at the moment to go up the post office on my bike, whenever I get inside, standing in line, I get this overwelming urge to cough, which takes supreme effort of manwillpower to overcome. So at least with the mask if I do fail and cough which will immediately inspire the sort of pitch fork and torch brigade descending upon me like nothing the internet can equal, the mask does its work and deadens the sound and would restrict the projection of moisture, virus laden or otherwise. I don't look on it as a protection device, more for the appearance of security for others.

Noticed on our local news that a leisure diver got separated from his support boat off Lyme yesterday, requiring the intervention of the Exmouth lifeboat ... my initial reaction was “what a complete prat”, which I guess is how the non-sailing public might regard dinghy sailors who get into trouble right now

It may be socially unacceptable but its actually quite hard to disagree.
We will never actually know what would have happened had we done nothing. Its been said by a group of UK scientists that the measures/advice put into place pre the current restrictions did significantly impact on the infection rate. Of course these measures will do that too - the question is did we need to do it? At the time it was the right thing to do.

'Altered reality' Really ? ... Believe what you want, and if you do not want to accept the abundantly obvious reality of Covid-19 then fine - but do not expect the rest of us to agree or to follow. Statistics and especially the interpretation of them is a massive field. To cut to the chase - the bottom line here is that you will always find just about any interpretation has an outlying ‘expert’ or two to 'verify' if you look widely enough. They will support just about any view you like or possibly already hold. The data does not change though. Always remind yourself it is generally possible to find 'plausable' sources to confirm just about anything - just possibly though they represent an extremely small minority of experts. If you do nothing more just consider current 'excess deaths' in this Covid instance and then do explain so the rest of us, the reasonable majority for most of the time, can 'get it' and recognise the 'underlying conspiracy' you imply. Griff, covid19 blocks up intensive care units, that's the simple answer, if NHS had been swamped accident victims, stroke victims add all the things that can cause you to need an ambulance, then add these to covid19 cases, it rapidly gets out of control, then Doctors have to make live or die decisions, Kate Garraways husband been in intensive care for over a month, times that by thousands.
