yep - that Post Brexit Dividend Unicorn will be put to good work dragging water up a hill paying the generosity off....
of course, no unicorn, and they'll just have to rely on the old faithfuls: 1) corp tax from SMEs 2) Income Tax from Middle Earners 3) Stamp Duty

I am happy to clap for the NHS as they deserve it.
But it does grate a little that in a year or two people will be banging on again about how they need to tax the rich to pay for all the costs when it is the entrepreneurs who are risking everything right now to keep the economy going. What chance that people come out to say thanks to those driving the economy forward? Thought not, they prefer to vilify us as fat cats

Who here has the ability and the balls to say: (No one here for sure)
We are going to war with country X and the allowable casualties are Y and the risk to the economy is Z Whatever the government does, whoever is in power, I wouldn’t want to be making those kinda decisions about the virus vs the economy. It’s a NoWin situation. I understand both perspectives perfectly, but some on here clearly don’t. Still, I love all the arm chair expert pontificating being postured here 😉 At least the sun is shining. Would be worse if it was winter... Edited by ttc546 - 23 Apr 20 at 3:45pm |

Yup - those same people trying to drive the economy and generate wealth are to be targeted by dear Ricki (having given then SFA whilst handing out wads of cash to everyone else) A mate of mine was in all sorts of strife with the VAT man, Inland Revenue etc - to the point that he offered them his office keys and told them to FO He provides income to 20 families but the tax men openly admitted its easier for them to investigate, get their teeth into and fine 1000 small businesses than try to take on just one major corporation who pay SFA taxes in the UK Perfect incentive for would be entrepeneurs to give up and drop back to the PAYE treadmill |

Well said... personally im in favour of a massive clamp down of Corp tax avoidance to pay this all back. Literally shut Starbucks down, refuse to let them reopen, until they pay.

For those types of companies you refer to - Yes. From my own personal perspective ... I run my own Ltd company ... I would like my CT to be deferred for a while .... |

As I understand it, there is already a formula that values, in Pounds-shillings-and-pence, human life (and quality thereof), used by NICE to decide on the availability of drugs and treatment on the NHS. It's a vaguely hidden part of the inevitable rationing a free-at-the-point-of-supply system requires, no matter how much money is thrown at it. To save googling, they reckon a 'quality adjusted life year" (QALY) is worth £20,000-£30,000. Going to war is slightly different, in that it's it's all very well modelling the military campaign (isn't it rule 1 that military campaign plans always fly out of the window on first contact with the enemy? Pretty much what happened on 23rd March) but recent history has surely taught us it's more important to model what comes afterwards. Then put plans in place accordingly. The civil-service's modelling on any of this stuff has been appalling in recent times though, whether its wars in the middle east, the treasury's apocalyptic economic predictions if the populace dared vote for Brexit or Neal Ferguson's 3-strikes-and-time-he-left-the-crease on Foot and Mouth, BSE and now this. I'll gloss over hopeless wind-guru et al weather forecasting never mind the whole climate-change thing. We also are suffering from what-doesn't-get-measured-doesn't-get-done (Lord help me, but I'm agreeing here with what GRF is saying). These aren't unforeseen consequences, they are ignored-consequences - the result will be, inevitably, they will bite us in the arse at some point. Also, absolute numbers taken in isolation are useless indicators; context is essential but the media clearly prefer the sensationalism and/or think we won't do as we are bid if they gave a balanced view. Is it just me thinks the news is simply propaganda and manipulation at the moment? |

Ah, the News. Of course the News is propaganda. It was during the WW's and always will be in times of crises - a bit of doom and gloom mixed with a healthy dose of It Will Be All Right On the Night ;-)
You dont want the masses knowing the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Economical truth is just fine Hate to say it, as she irritates me, but Nicola "Independence, Independence" Sturgeon was actually right today in her "realism" speech about a very, very gradual and controlled return to some form of normality - but not the same normality.
