The JRS will not keep businesses alive, it will just draw out the day of reckoning. I run founded a business 20 years back that now employs 500+ people and years ago I got asked to join a panel of people that are consulted monthly by the Bank of England to help it set monetary policy - bit like them keeping a finger on the nations financial pulse. As a reward I get to see the stats that the BoE record and I can assure you that the numbers are really very bad and that we have months before there is irreparable damage that will make what we have seen so far look like a cake walk!

I don't disagree - but the JRS was more than I was expecting this gov to offer!

I think the Government was shocked by the level of compliance with their request for a lockdown of sorts. Economic activity went off the edge of a cliff really fast and people were far more observant than the authorities expected. From what I can see that took them by surprise and caused a bit of panic resulting in more generous support than they had anticipated having to give!

Its just one of the dates being banded around. I am sure we are being painted a dour picture so that we are grateful for anything we get - understandable. There are a lot of mixed messages going around and the reporting hasn't been brilliant.

Well it's hinting at a 'conspiracy' that I don't believe, but in doing so talks at least at a trend away from the lockdown and it certainly calls that 'Expert' Ferguson into question. Principly this bit "Now, in 2020, Ferguson and Imperial College have released a report which claims that half a million Britons and 2.2 million Americans may be killed by Covid–19. The report has still not been peer-reviewed; despite this and Ferguson's glaring record of mathematical sensationalism, the British Government has adopted the devastating socio-economic lockdown that Ferguson has proposed." After detailing a list of virtually every prediction he made being wrong and particularly devastating to the Farming Industry here. He is typical of his kind and should never have been taken at his word without due diligence and peer review. Edited by iGRF - 23 Apr 20 at 2:38pm |

So here’s a rare moment of me supporting if not entirely agreeing with IGRF. The Imperial College paper led by Ferguson has a fundamental problem as the basis of long-term planning (lockdown was absolutely the right decision given everything we did not know.
It proposes a solution which will not work! It says so itself! |

I've heard quite a number of people saying that this is the best spring they've ever had - great weather, sitting at home on 80% of salary, not spending money etc etc
What these people seem to have forgotten, or not understood, is that when the government assistance stops many companies will be looking around and suddenly this 'great spring' may turn into the 'worst few years' for many many people as businesses go pop or making sweeping cuts I was also astonished about the generosity of the 80% assistance but wages are regularly a small part of running businesses who, without work, will be shedding staff by the truck load shortly Those working will then not only be paying for the unemployed but also repaying the government's recent generous handouts Utter joy |
