World Sailing wanting a bailout by UK taxpayer, putting its staff on furlough leave. Good use of taxpayers' money?

Urm yes... If they became unemployed that would be more of a drain on the ecomony than paying 80% if their wage

I think so, we need steering groups to survive.

Just as good or bad a use of taxpayers money as bailing out any other organisation.

personally I think it's golden opportunity for an algorithmic assessment based on Corporation Tax returns too..... I've heard of several institutional multinational corp tax avoiders using the Job Retention Scheme to furlough staff to offset heavy payrolls in these low income months.  Some even still insisting workers 'do their bit' to 'pull together through this' too.

Anyway, a digression from World Sailing's case, who I am sure, are beyond reproach for any mismanagement and/or dodgy governance. ;-)

As long as it's repayable and they have paid tax here in the UK in the first place, I guess it ranks alongside all those billionaire football clubs furloughing their ground and lower order coaching staff..

Although it is a 'World' body and one could question why just the UK should pick up the tab. Anyone any idea how Fifa is working the system?

Furlough about protecting staff I believe, was easier to set up than self employed payments, they are being paid via inland revenue system, much much better for country than unemployment, people still have money to spend.

I guess they may not have much choice, with the Olympics getting put back unitl next year, as a high percentage of their overall income comes from awarding tv rights for the olympics every four years.

Surely the UK government has done pretty well from World Sailing over the decades?  Money coming from people all over the world (in one way or the other, from sailor's dues through to Olympic profits) has been going into the UK.  The World Sailing employees must have been paying income tax, VAT and other taxes and generally contributing to the UK's economy.

Why is this supposed to be a one way street?  What is the alternative?  Is the UK expected to gain the benefit of money flowing from the rest of the world for decades, and then to expect the rest of the world to cough up when the cash flows the other way for a little while?

Switzerland has extremely strong lockdown measures in place. It also houses the HQs for about half the Olympic and major sports including swimming, cycling, gymnastics, golf, football, rowing and basketball amongst others.  Why on earth should the UK benefit from the Swiss taxpayer's support for the HQs of those sports, and then not expect to kick in a vastly smaller sum for supporting the HQ of sailing?
