Which clubs do you consider to be the biggest and best, the Liverpool's and Manchester United's of the sailing world?

Criteria somewhat lose but membership, turnout, reputation, facilities etc play a part.

Hayling Island
Grafham
Stokes Bay
Burghfield
...

Best sounds a good measure.

Biggest will often be a drawback as the club bit is overtaken by the business ethos.

Blithfield of course- members run club in a Premier league location.

Leigh & Lowton in the NW probably qualifies, along with Yorkshire Dales SC. Inland clubs and sea locations not on the South Coast are at a disadvantage I guess.

Maybe there should be a series of events where clubs pick a team and sail against each other on handicap at a neutral venue.

I can see a trend developing here! I would agree with all of the suggestions so far but this list is going to grow.

I prefer member run clubs and I think that should be factored into their league position

Its not a "favourite" club question, otherwise there will be thousands of opinions!
L&L and Blithfield I would agree with, Bartley Green and YDSC not so sure about.

Brighlingsea. Datchet? Chew Valley? Whitstable?

Why is biggest a factor in best?

RYA has a Club of the Year announced at the dinghy show each year. I can't see any of those in the OP as winners since 2008.

Beware also, how often to megastar members actually turn up in weekly club racing

To feature in the list I would expect they should be capable of hosting a significant championships.

Biggest - because size is an indication of popularity (or possibly just proximity to large population, but still), but obviously a big membership with a small regular turnout isn't necessarily best. Equally, Pwhelli can host major champs but I'm not sure its a Premier league club for week-in week-out sailing.

Here's my top 10 starter for 10, and we can relegate and promote as the debate continues. I fully expect to have forgotten some bigguns:

1. HISC
2. Grafham
3. Stokes Bay
4. Burghfield
5. Leigh & Lowton
6. Brightlingsea
7. Draycote
8. Datchet
9. Whistable
10. Itchenor
