Interesting thread, it seems the OP is either misinformed about Moth sailing or deliberately using hyperbole.

- Prizes were vouchers not cash.  Lots of similar prizes through the fleet:
Eddie Bridle – 1st Boat older than 5 years
Brad Gibson – Trier’s Trophy
Sam Barker – 1st Corinthian & Best 1st Nationals
Ricky Tagg – 1st Grand Master
Fionn Conway – 1st Under 21
Josie Gliddon – Ladies Champion
Simon Hiscocks – 8th Overall
Jason Belben – 7th Overall
Dave Kenefick – 6th Overall
Dan Ellis - 5th Overall
Mike Lennon – 1st Master & 4th Overall
Benoit Marie - 3rd Overall
Brad Funk – 1st Jnr Master, 1st Overseas & 2nd Overall
Dylan Fletcher - National Champion

Other sponsor contributions provided free breakfast, post race beer & pasta, and socials, making a great event.

Responding on some of the other points:

- There are several very good boats available now at well under £30k.  Good opportunity for talented sailors to buy &  race in Gold Fleet at the 2020 Worlds in Weymouth!
- You'd be hard pushed to do £5k of damage even on a bad day.  I don't see many references to breakages in event reports, a quick look at reports on Y&Y website shows only one mention, a broken shroud.
- The moth fleet are mainly insured through Noble, who are excellent.  Noble have provided sponsorship for class events for years, so presumably they find the fleet to have a reasonable and sustainable claims record.
- Yes, Brad does seem to have a nice life.  Probably why he's a nice guy to have in the fleet.

As Brad would (probably) say, enjoy the planet and your sailing.

The single most expensive part I can find from any manufacturer is a mainfoil at £2600, but this includes both parts and it'd be pretty unusual to do both.

Mast is £900 plus VAT, sails have got a bit silly at £2k.

When Moth sailors talk about breakages most of the time it's stuff like ropes and running rigging - there is little redundancy on a Moth and if something like this fails it's generally race over and with the high loads on everything boatwork is key.

Having arrived in Weymouth after a 25+ knot day of racing I was surprised how little repair work was going on.

To be fair, your point is still valid - when the top 4 are pros with equipment deals what use is a voucher for a new wetsuit? Thankfully I know the winner donated his to his highly talented yet humble boatbuilder.

How much is the main foil?

The 'cheques' are actually vouchers from title sponsor Wetsuit Outlet.

But surely the insurance pays for that not the sailor?

Insurance for moths is a bit special i think, nobody in their right mind is going to insure a 30k boat which breaks every regatta for anything less than an extreme premium. Just read the reports on moth events its all about how much breakage there was.

maybe worth doing some research before you type?

On the N12 circuit currently sponsored by GUL, vouchers work well, normally £50 or £25 per person which throughout the season helps to refresh your sailing kit!

Prizes throughout the fleet too with the fastest, juniors, Admirals Cup, non T foilers, vintage, family alongside all the prizes at the nationals. Alongside this you get some club / event sponsored prizes too. Wine works well....
3513, 3551 - National 12
136069 - Laser
32541 - Mirror
4501 - Laser 4000

We did very well at the Phantom Nationals thanks to lots of generous sponsors

New sail from Morgan Sails
Dimension Polyant donated a voucher for free sail cloth
southern ropes donated a complete re rope package
Norths gave 3 vouchers £100, £75 and £50
Crewsaver gave us 2 of there top of the range Ergofit buoyancy aids
Moatt sails bags and T shirts
Ovington boats lots of T shirts mugs and caps
Selden water bottles and drybags for every competitor and Rib crews
P&B Vouchers I believe (didn't see them)
Office Design Works free beer when you came ashore
In fact every entrant went away with something and for instance Peter Harlow was chuffed with his new sail.

Cycling still has money for prizes. I think there might have been some rule about it somewhere that X amount of the entry fees has to go back as prizes.

I found it quite odd coming from sailing, but others would complain if there wasn't money as prizes and felt quite strongly. However, on a good day it would still be a couple of hundred quid winnings for a race which against the outlay isn't trivial.

I get having sponsors wares, the harken blocks at the 800 nationals were nice and worth a fair bob and will get used... as will the wine and flask! But it would feel getting cash, if the event turns a profit I would rather it go as surplus for next years, reinvested in to the event or club in some way.
