Noticed they gave out novelty cheques for £150 £100 and £75 for top three at the moths.
Bit weird isn't it? Guys sailing £30,000 boats breaking £5000 parts on a daily basis and the winner gets less than the cost of a foil cover ![]() This guy Funk has a great life over from US for 3 months to sail what does he do for a day job ![]() And yet it's so popular |

That's why prize money ceased in most sports (apart from full on professional). The prize money was trivial anyway, and it just came out of everyone's entry fees, so why bother.

Cycling still has money for prizes. I think there might have been some rule about it somewhere that X amount of the entry fees has to go back as prizes.
I found it quite odd coming from sailing, but others would complain if there wasn't money as prizes and felt quite strongly. However, on a good day it would still be a couple of hundred quid winnings for a race which against the outlay isn't trivial. I get having sponsors wares, the harken blocks at the 800 nationals were nice and worth a fair bob and will get used... as will the wine and flask! But it would feel getting cash, if the event turns a profit I would rather it go as surplus for next years, reinvested in to the event or club in some way.

We did very well at the Phantom Nationals thanks to lots of generous sponsors New sail from Morgan Sails Dimension Polyant donated a voucher for free sail cloth southern ropes donated a complete re rope package Norths gave 3 vouchers £100, £75 and £50 Crewsaver gave us 2 of there top of the range Ergofit buoyancy aids Moatt sails bags and T shirts Ovington boats lots of T shirts mugs and caps Selden water bottles and drybags for every competitor and Rib crews P&B Vouchers I believe (didn't see them) Office Design Works free beer when you came ashore In fact every entrant went away with something and for instance Peter Harlow was chuffed with his new sail.

Would love to know who is buying £5000 parts. Send them my way would you?
The 'cheques' are actually vouchers from title sponsor Wetsuit Outlet. Edited by aardvark_issues - 17 Sep 19 at 8:05am |

On the N12 circuit currently sponsored by GUL, vouchers work well, normally £50 or £25 per person which throughout the season helps to refresh your sailing kit!
Prizes throughout the fleet too with the fastest, juniors, Admirals Cup, non T foilers, vintage, family alongside all the prizes at the nationals. Alongside this you get some club / event sponsored prizes too. Wine works well.... |

Insurance for moths is a bit special i think, nobody in their right mind is going to insure a 30k boat which breaks every regatta for anything less than an extreme premium. Just read the reports on moth events its all about how much breakage there was.
