It's indeed a pity the selection process has been so screwed up by the RYA jobsworths over the years particularly in windsurfing where I'm pretty sure we don't have the best female available representing us and feel there are probably better male racers outside of the squad bubble, but then including them would mean the coaching system is not on it, which we also know to be true.
Back in the day, the last minute do or die event at Weymouth had a lot going for it. Free spirited none regimented racers that do it for the sheer fun, corinithian rather than low grade professional, offer far more imv. |

Having spoken to a number to a number of olympic class coaches I am pretty confident that is the selection policy although I meant to say class euros instead of worlds. I don't think Enoshima last year was part of the trails. Unfortuantly for James and Flynn their rule 69 incident in Palma meant that Dylan and Stu won the 9er trail by quite a large margin for right or wrong. I would expect that all classes other than the Laser and Nacra will be announced soon.

I expect the biggest cost is the wage bill ... so if you stop spreading your support and coaching staff thinly and focus it on less athletes you will get better results. If the raw material (the athletes) are so evenly matched with just a year to go I would bet that selecting one and applying all the resources to improve it will be more likely to medal than letting the selection delay and then picking one at the last minute and having little time to put the icing on the cake. It probably doesn't matter if you pick one or the other to develop as the level is so similar and then use the run in to add the shine .... elite sport is a tough gig and a number of people are going to be disappointed. But the selectors and the performance director will know the likely outcomes of the various selection strategies and act accordingly ... tough decisions will have to be made.

But what resources do they put in to developing the standard of the one boat? What resources get thrown behind the selected team that can't be pushed out to a second boat? How confident are the RYA that their extra boost in resource from 12 months out will be better than selecting the form boat from 6 months out?

Select early then you can focus all your resources on developing the standard of those selected rather than wasting money on people who won’t be going.
It’s about maximising the budget ... if you had unlimited resources you could fund more teams for longer.

Which is what I reckoned looking at the test event and no-shows for the Enoshima WC. But... isn't that kind of a mad selection process? The Nacra, 49er and FX haven't had a worlds since Aarhus. Looking specifically at Dylan's and Stu's programme, assuming they're doing the bare minimum due to Sail GP commitments it would appear the selection was Enoshima, Miami, Palma, Euros, then get a medal at the test event. In the Nacra and 49er they have a packed winter coming up with two more world championships, a euros and an Enoshima WC all before the games. In the 49er specifically, with the ranking just out today James and Fynn are still world number 1. It wouldn't be unrealistic for them to pick up medals at each of major championships and then you'd have a situation where the world champion (possibly), world number 1 for 12 months prior to Olympics, double (or triple) winner of the Enoshima WC and a team not beaten by their GB compatriots at a worlds, or at the Olympic venue since 2017 isn't at the Olympics. In the scenario above if Dylan and Stu didn't win at the games there would have to be serious questions of the selectors... and what would their answer be? That Dylan and Stu won a silver medal at an event James and Fynn weren't allowed to go to? Which takes me back to the OP, why, if by the lee's process is correct, are the RYA so focused on getting selection done so early? Is it really that much of an advantage to get the full backing behind one team from so far out?

The trails process was made up of a number of events (palma + class worlds etc). The winner of this trial was offered a place at the ready steady tokyo event. If they medalled at the test event then they are almost definatly select else the trials continued.

I think it is about the recent form as they peak towards the event ...
49er FX looks like the toughest as the results are quite inconsistent.I'd go Dobson / Tidey. 49er I would say Fletcher / Bithell just shade it but Peters / Syrett are world ranked #1 ... either could win Silver (as NZL will win gold) As for the Laser anyone's guess but I'd go Thompson based on experience of the games.

Hard to call...
Gimson - Burnet 3rd in ranking to Saxton Boniface's 8th (but they've had injuries and missed events) Gimson 8th at previous world to Saxtons 10th. Gimson 5th at 2018 Enoshima WC to Saxtons 27th Gimson 3rd Palma v 4th for Saxton Gimson 45 Genoa v 2nd for Saxton (but fluky light conditions) Gimson 2nd Euro v 1st for Saxton Gimson 2nd Test event v 3rd for Saxton Gimson 5th Enoshima WC v 2nd for Saxton Super close! The Nacra (along with 49er + FX) have their 2019 Worlds in NZL this December. They then have the 2020 worlds in Aus in Feb. Looking further ahead they have a Euros in Garda in May, which you'd think would be possibly the last selection event, or would they wait as long as the Enoshima WC in June just a month out from the Olympics?

Anyone’s guess but I’d say Ali is clearly the best Radial sailor.
The Nacra looks a tough call. But I’d go Saxton.
