So, the before the start comment...
Yes, if I'm on the layline and going for the starboard end, it matters not how fast the other boats are, it's all about placement. Did it in a Hansa 303, yardstick 1630, on Sunday. But would I hunt down a slower boat prestart and prevent them from starting (when not in a 303!)? No. Seems totally unsporting. Getting a decent start is like ensuring you cover the fleet if leading. Just sensible strategy to ensure you don't lose places. |

Mind you usually in a handicap start situation the advantage is with slow boats that can hang on the line and point at the sky. A high performance boat that doesn't point especially high and needs water flowing over the foils is at a considerable disadvantage.

Out of interest what are the two boats involved and in what conditions, also is it pond sailing or open sea? It would be interesting to know the performance differences? For me handicap racing is great fun but not to be taken too seriously as it seems that every dog has it's day

Should *any* amateur sailboat racing be taken very seriously?

No less seriously than any paid professional entertainment masquerading as sport.

Two good points, but as I once said to somebody arguing the point about rule adherence, so why not miss out the odd mark now and again, I mean if it's not that serious, why not take a short cut?
If you're going to destroy some guys race with an aggressive cover, why not just nick the bung out of his boat before the start? You need rules for it to be a sport, but what you don't need are so many nobody even knows them all, and contradictions and loop holes. In this instance I would have thought an over reaching 'Fair Sailing' rule would be appropriate, that would prevent a young Ben Ainslie being tricked in *Atlanta and so becoming as bad as the trickster. *Did a bit of research, thanks Gordon, so it was Nurture after all Edited by iGRF - 01 Aug 19 at 10:03am |

So....we are the slow boat and regularly sit on top and slow down the faster boat (chief rival) to ensure a better result for us. We have done it to win series and just to ensure we win that race in a series...
is that acceptable?

'Fair' racing ? Only possible f there is a broad level of goodwill really I guess - or a really tight set of rules given the apparent lack of agreement. It is sad frankly that we should have to comment or even discuss this one ... the 'rules' are limited and 'not fully fit for purpose' in a moral climate that has frankly going to the dogs - everything now seemingly needing just a legalistic approach etc. I spent over a decade team racing way back, few holds barred there etc. But context is everything. Time for meaningful examination of the rules at the very least..... Just my opinion of course ....
