As I said on t'other thread the Laser standard sail measures considerably more than 7m as that is the simple triangle area ignoring the luff, leech and foot rounds which may add as much as another square metre or more.

Possibly frustrating as RS brought the 7 and 9 as they were, possibly despite already having the 6 in the pipeline and knowing it was probably better suited to the women's singe hander.

Did the Laser change anything?

No it was the d-zero which had deck extenders and a different sail

Thanks.

Still puzzled about the D Zero's ranking, given the applause it has here and the way it looks. On the other hand, it would not be the first boat to over-do the fine bow idea.

I think the part of the report that the D-zero being too technical because it has mast rake chock and different traveler systems so distracting from the athleticism speaks volumes of the direction they want the sport to go. Also I don’t think the D-zero or the M14 are really set up for global one design quality production.

I guess the 49er, the 470, the Nacra all have loads of moving parts, maybe they want one without?

To my highly biased and partisan eye, and given other information coming from the trials from admittedly dubious sources, the report reads like a document compiled by people with a certain agenda, who want to appear as if they are going through an appropriate process. Plenty for me doesn't add up to what I have heard from sailors who have sailed 3 of the 4 boats on trial, and sounds like justification for statements was based on heresay rather than fact or experience.
That said I think that WS have let themselves down by keeping the laser regardless of who the pretender is.  I think too much was made of universality, as any of the pretenders is still a plug and play una singlehander, for which the laser could be a perfectly good trainer / feeder etc.

I think that they are or could be if the market warranted, nothing easier than finding good partners who can achieve excellent consistency if you can guarantee good volume.

Makes you wonder if the Laser without the XD kit would have scored even better: having a usable kicker and outhaul must be very confusing for Olympic wannabes.

Interesting isn't it, how what we're used to conditions what we think looks right. On most of those classes the droopy boom is an artifact of a one design sail and bend or rake way in excess of designer's intentions. Aerodynamically it's a nonsense.
