Hi all, Our club is debating removing the one off flat joining fee of £50. Last year it pulled in approx. £1200. Current thought is that if we get rid of it more people will join so we won't loose out. Should it stay or should it go? |

If it goes there will be trouble, if it stays there will be double...

Do you need members more than they need you?

What is average cost of membership ? The £50 might not appear to be much of an incentive.

We got rid many years ago. You may get more members but if the deal is really sweet for newbies to give sailing a try, they might not hang around for long if they find that it is not all they thought it might be.....

My local club (finally) dropped ours after many years of campaigning by the membership. It was actively putting people off joining the club and did seem a little elitest.
The debate was strong but the reason for keeping (it was a new members contribution of the club infrastructure and capital expenditure) really didn't hold water.
I do note that 240 new memberships a year is pretty good though. Our membership take on is usually pretty healthy. |

Scrap the joining fee, give renewals a £50 discount. Put fees up by £50.

I suspect that joining fees belong to today much like black balling did, to a time when clubs were elusive and exclusive. The only valid reason for retaining them is possibly that the additional investment is a disincentive for not renewing ... however £ 50 compared with the typical club annual subscription is neither here nor there.

The main justification for joining fees is that's it's a penalty that can be used with people who fail to renew when they should and then turn up 6 months later expecting to be able to pay the basic rate. So you can say, sorry you're no longer a member you need to rejoin, that'll be £50 please.
A better solution is probably to do a modified version of mossy's idea, and give a discount to those who renew on time, and not to those who renew late.

That’s £50 every year though, rather than a one off £50? |
