had a think that treating at least part of club sailing as park run is operated would potentially be a good thing, in part to encourage participation from existing sailors and non sailors and perhaps bring them into more die-hard racing....
i'm going to make some assumptions here..... park run:
so how could we apply the above to sailing?
so what do people think? could this work? |

Cyclists have something called a sportive event, I assume it's something between a casual ride out in company and a full race.

HISC did a very similar get racing club and it was very popular. It first relied on a club training coach, then on volunteers from each of the 'classes'. It took a lot of effort to maintain with volunteers and the numbers turning up were a bit up and down I gather latterly. I'm not sure if it happened in 2018.

Personal best times don't work in an event driven by nature? Tends to be why we fixate on results, not PBs. Without that, it doesn't seem to have a point beyond sailing in company, which is what we have already at clubs.
I can see that picking up some of the vibe of park run and sportifs would be good, though. |

It sounds like a perfect idea for club sailing to at least try... and from a personal perspective, far more engaging for mixed-boat sailing than the bullsh*t that’s usually on offer.

true Rupert, but over time you could have a pb for certain wind speed bands. guess the point is its sailing / coaching in company which is not what i see happening now, what i see is boats disappearing off and a whole bunch of "banter" in the dinghy park afterwards that does the sport no favours. As you point out its the vibe that needs addressing. I believe that py racing has its place and that if applied correctly does a fab job of bringing disparate boats together, could it be better, yes, could there be a better system.... yet to see one but yes there probably is.

sounds great but too reliant on volunteers, if it was part of the "race" calendar, a more integral part of the club sailing, and just people getting in boats as they usually do but with the attitude of waiting at the next mark for the slower boat to catch up and offer advice and the like. You're already out for a sail so nothing extra to organise.

Maybe it is all about the people and their attitude; 15 of us took part in an “ad hoc” PY race on Saturday morning, simply because it was a nice day and a forecast 15mph Southerly

One of the main reasons Park Run works is because there is only one per town/city-region so it concentrates like-minded people in one place at a given time. I've said it before, but will say it again; one of the biggest challenges we face is too many sailing clubs, particularly in coastal areas where there are often 2, 3 or even more in harbours or estuary settings. IMO this dilutes the numbers at any one place / time and makes it harder to <voluntarily> run a mix of events that suits a wider band of abilities and wants. There are some brilliant clubs out there that offer fun sessions and training on saturdays to complement racing on Sundays and also offer training and fun sessions for cadets on other days with evening racing in the summer. Councils should support these excellent clubs by helping them secure the land they need to have bigger boat parks, better water access, disabled facilities etc = the bigger they are, the more the resources can be concentrated in those locations. Close less well-positioned or smaller clubs and persuade the members to join the bigger ones. When the conversation goes to other sports it is, IMPO, extremely rare to see another where there are so many different clubs and organisations in small georgraphic areas.
