Nice one Rushy. I knew of a 600, well, most of it, lost back in the brambles and long grass. One of the things we looked at was could the hull be modded to create a chine for the last 5 or 6 feet of the hull. You've also done the Blaze thing, so you probably know that the boat was a bad tempered **** with the original rig. They Mike Lyons took it on, sorted the rig and made the boat a sweet single hander. I thought a similar trick might well make the 650/b13 a far nicer boat.... sadly someone came along and claimed the bits before we could gets started. But I like what you've done so far.....

The trapeze has gone, hadn't thought about chines, I'll see how it sails, maybe next winters protect. The Blaze CA weren't interested in adding a spinnaker for fear of diluting the class, then came the epoxy version, mk2,mk3,Halo and now the Fire, I would think a lightweight, ie no corrector weights and a descent sized kite would have blown the d1 and the 100 into the weeds, and sold by the bucket load. Missed opportunity?

Probably but then how many missed opportunities have there been throughout history?
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Rushy

Thr Mk2 Blaze came out nearly 16 years ago btw ! and after that just a couple of minor deck moulding changes. When was your spinnaker experiment ?!

You were not the only one to fit out a Blaze with spinnaker a few years back.  We held back ourselves when the 'pre-marketing' for 100 and D1 got going and commercially this was very fortunate with hindsight.  There was of course market share available for a Blaze derivative along the lines you describe but it would have been severely squeezed by the new entrants named above .. even if it was technically (and we would argue this of course cos it was true ... superior ;-).  Anyway we were not convinced that the potential was as attractive as some suggested especially with the available resources of a smaller company.   It could have been a 'missed opportunity' we know BUT it was as likely to have been a financial 'crater' we were rather fortunate to sidestep.  There were some additional specific commerical reasons related to Icon development and potential collaborations that obviously meant we could not do it at the time.

You should point people to the youtube 'Blaze-mit-spinnaker' video as well .... We kept nothing !  I do think that (technically) it very possible to make a true 'bench-mark' hiking 2-sail boat today but I'm happy to leave that now to a someone with a considerably deeper pocket.

Will the hull take the different stresses of hiking off the racks?
Only one way to find out.

Hi Mike, I've been a huge fan of the Blaze, I've owned 3, where I sail a kite makes a lot of sense, long downhill legs. The video is me in the Blaze that I converted, I'm not a brilliant sailor btw :) I probably went further than most people would want to go, I run the launch tube right through the hull! the thing is it worked, very well, offwind a 700 wasn't hugely faster, of course the Blaze aided by the huge flat planning back end. The Blaze with your epoxy hull, lightened, and a kite would be sooo good! As you say, perhaps for another soul.

Main still fully battened. I wonder if it was a consideration this time round? (not that I've ever found fully battened a problem, but I've heard it said)

Looks good though. Is this Alex's boat that was at the nationals but with square top new sail?
