I was thinking the hardware installation side too

WHY would you need to tow a boat? Why would you own a boat?

You are talking here about complete changes to the way we use cars and moving people about the country, but NOT talking about changes to the sailing model!

Currently, that model says you own your own boat, and take it with you. But already, many clubs now own boats that are available for people to use - so to go sailing you already don't need to own your own boat.

Look at the advertising around the new RS21 - designed for pay as you go sailing.

The new model could well be back to proper one-design racing! Turn up, rig a boat (the same boat as everyone elses, designed for / picked for that water and the typical weather), go racing. Next weekend, go to a different location and race against the same group of friends, but at a different location in a different class of boat.

No need to move boats at all - just move the people to where the sailing is.

Because people will still want to own their own boats, tinker with them, configure how they want it set up. I agree the should be no need but people will, just like there's no need for vinyl or CDs with Spotify and the like, but they still buy them.

Because the joy of boat ownership is 90% bimbling and 10% sailing.

This is because the MET attend car accidents and see how dangerous battery fires are compared with hydrogen canister fires. The latter is safer and less environmentally destructive.

I think the same argument applies to cars as well as boats. The takeup of shared autonomous cars is going to be way slower than enthusiasts suggest, because a lot of people (particularly those who don't live in inner cities) find owning one incredibly useful. and like having their own car. No one who commutes in a car will end up using a car call service. Nor probably those who do a daily school run, etc. There simply won't ever be enough around to get you there when you need to. Car and boat ownership will outlast most or all of us here.

If you have ever tried to hire a Boris Bike in London from a suburb in the morning or from the city in the evening you will know that sharing is not all its cracked up to be. The issue is that sharing does not deal with peaks and troughs in demand very well.

Besides - for me - I drive very few miles each year so I tend to want to drive a car that makes me smile lots and that requires me to be in control :-)

I don't get all this electric car/environmental thing. Surely rising sea levels is good for us as there will be more of the stuff to sail on and less of a distance for us to get to it.  Wink

And it will be warmer - no need for 6mm steamers anymore.
