Go short on Tesla shares and you might make enough money to buy a boat!

In my opinion hybrid cars now offer the best of both worlds, good economy, low emissions and ability to run on gas when it's needed. This way you don't depend on the charging stations that are sometimes pretty hard to get ahold of, especially in the big cities.

We, well my wife anyway, has had a Zoe for a couple of years now. It's one of the early ones (=lowest range) but is a brilliant city car. Only slightly harder to drive than having a chauffeur.
The whole charging points thing is a mess. UK seems mostly yo be EU plugs - but then available charge rates aren't all the same, and some cars can't charge as fast as others. Theres a ChAddemo base of stations, if you happen to own a Nissan. Tesla have their supercharger points, Audi is advertising its teamed up with Shell and there are 400 charging stations in Europe Which doesn't seem like a lot to me - dunno what flavour they come in, but sounds like yet another plug/station combo. Before uptake is widespread it really needs sorting out. It really screams 'EU legislation' Japan stopped selling diesel cars around 2003, after the Kyoto agreement and about the same time UK was encouraging people to switch to diesel. Commercials are still being sold though. Think Toyota are stopping diesel cars production in a couple of years time? but then their hybrid stuff has been around for quite a long time now and has matured. Non plug-in hybrids, errr..you still have to burn dinosaurs at some point to charge the batteries back up, they don't somehow magically fill up on their own. Guy I know has a Mitsubishi outlander. He can just do the round trip to work (30 miles) on a charge (and charges it at work) but complains about range on petrol too, circa 200 miles, when on business trips. Our hybrid solution was to have the Zoe for short journeys and an Avensis for the longer ones. Plus I can get a windsurf board on / in it. Plus the Zoe has one of those infernal black box things so my daughter can drive it. I use the Avensis.

I've been looking at the Outlander van, which is basically an Outlander with the back seats removed and a flat bed installed, but it qualifies for Vat relief so I've been thinking about swapping out the T5 for it but so far can't bring myself to give it up, I've had T series VW's practically all my windsurf and sailing life.
We recently bought the Audi A3 etron which we're really pleased with, had to go up to Glasgow to get it, but having returned at the end of June filling it up at Scotch corner we've only filled it up twice since, plugged in at home and generally only when the Solar Panels are charging, so green are us. Trouble is she doesn't let me and the dogs in it so hence the van thinking. Edited by iGRF - 17 Nov 18 at 9:39am |

Me and 3 friends a the club 3 weeks ago - only 4 there on a weekday.
I was the only one without a VW van. I'd have one, but pretty sure the Kitchen Wench wouldn't drive it, despite the Avensis actually being the same length and width. All depends on how you use your vehicle. I find having to sit in queues when visiting petrol stations instead of just plugging it in a bit annoying now.

Audi A3 etron 5 hours with a 3 pin plug, 2 to 3 hours with a home charger, can't use the 7kw chargers.

So if it takes that long how do the re-charging points in service stations for example actually do anything constructive? I wouldn't want to hang around one of those places for several hours to get enough charge to travel anywhere, let along wait in a queue for one to come free. I just don't see how electric cars are viable at the moment, I guess that the low numbers currently help but once everything else is banned then you've got an issue surely??
