Be careful what you wish for. My Tasar was a very light one. When I was repairing it I was amazed at the amount of ‘dry’ cloth in the weak areas that had never seen any resin.

Nice quote but contextually that was in the 40s or 50s when a 14ft dinghy typically weighed something like 200kg.
It’s easy to make a dinghy pretty much globally stiff enough at a ludicrously light weight if you are intelligent with reinforcements, but taken to logical extremes if you went to 100gsm over nomex like some rowing shells to get down to let’s say a 25kg Bare hull, you are left with something that you can push your finger through.

I think if Uffa Fox was around today and was aware of modern composites he would say that “weight has its uses in steamrollers and to a degree in dinghies built with sufficiently conservative scantlings as to make them a viable recreational proposition.”

Whilst we have boats that are easy to pull up the ramp, these lightweights have narrowed the range of optimal crew weights, and raised the level of skill required to sail them; somewhat diminishing their potential markets ...

Ah that's why I can actually sail the Spice...... LOL 

In a slightly serious note, the first time I sailed it with a crew I was amazed how much more stable it was than solo... I shouldn't have been surprised mind you, he was about 17 stone.....

Going back to the OP, this is so wrong it hurts and frankly I hope “sailing” now gets the boot from this Olympic circus and we can move on with our sport not having this element in it anymore.  It’s so far from the challenge that can be related to the man in the street that it’s almost lost all relevance, IMO.

If you don’t think that matters, then look at the sports with the highest take up due to Olympic exposure.

All a bit like Brexit really. Change needed (arguable)...the politicians fudge it...and most people either side of the argument unhappy. Like Brexit, the change in the olympic classes won't affect me much. I'll just carry on doing what I do.

Wot I sed a page ago Thumbs Up but the issue is, using the Spice as an example 'cos it's what I know about, A Spice hull weighed around 85kg out of the mould, by the time you've added space frame for the rudder and to support the rig you've added 15-20kg (I have a main frame in the garage and will weigh it tomorrow), then  few blocks and cleats and you may be up to 25kg. Allow, say, 5% over in the lay up and you have a potential for a hull weighing 110kg but with some 'reasonable' (yeah, right) grounds for the marketing men to quote a 'hull weight' of 85kg on the brochure. I14s (from which spawned the design of the Buzz and, consequently, the Spice, weighed around 50kg, inc fittings, back in the '90's so were the benchmark. Appearing so much heavier would not have improved sales, that is indisputable, but, for all that, the Spice (and, presumably the Buzz) is actually a decent boat, I've had a ball sailing mine over the last ten years so that extra weight (after the shock of discovering just how much of it there was) has not detracted from my enjoyment. OTOH, If "Flat Broke" was 30kg lighter I'm sure it would be even better.
