Back in the day even I knew if you wanted a 'light' Iso you went for a Saturday morning boat and did a deal with a well known ex Imco racer.
Just as I had to put up with some mothers and their sons going through all the One Designs in the warehouse and putting them on the scales. Edited by iGRF - 14 Nov 18 at 9:55am |

If the advertising blurb says it weighs 85kg and when you weigh it it weighs 115kg you would be justifiably miffed, even if they all weigh 115kg. L2k weight thread here :- https://www.yachtsandyachting.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9020&title=laser-2000-weight That suggests they also failed the one design test too.......

This was a new boat, just collected from dealer, perhaps they have increased lay up in critical areas, there has to be a minimum weight you can get down to without compromise.

I have a very strong feeling my last Laser was a particularly light one.... it certainly planed quicker than others around me in marginal winds and I don’t for one minute attribute skill to the rationale.

There does, but I'll bet it's considerably less that 140kg for a 15' boat

I have long believed that the 'answer' to this question is for all new boats, SMOD or not, to come with a weight and measurement certificate that shows it conforms to the specs printed by the manufacturer or spec signed up to by the builder. The DoC in most user manuals suffices for a lot of white goods and consumer equipment but it's perfectly normal in many other areas to get such 'as built' information on collection/delivery to show that the manufacturer has done what they were contracted to do when you agreed to pay / handed over your cash for a particular product.

Yep, you would have thought it wouldn’t be beyond the wit of man to provide a consumer version of whatever QC documents each unit must have internally.... or are we suggesting, perish the thought, that actually a lot of smods are bodged together in quiet periods?

Yup, not so important for training boats but it matters for those SMODs that are for serious racers. I suspect all boats are weighed at the factory anyway so it should be easy to sign each one off with a QC certificate.

Touring Caravans are exactly the same, a bloke in a flat cap looks at them and says they weigh this, a few years ago Caravan Club weight tested a selection of new vans all of them were heavier than spec' one actually weighed more than maximum design fully laden weight.

I suspect the marketing men have a disproportionate say in how much the brochure says the boat weighs
