As long as the PY is based on them pumping, what’s the problem?
Anything that closes the delta between high and low wind performance surely makes it easier to handicap? |

Yup, agreed. It's little different than between cats and monohulls (or even Raceboards and Formula Windsurfing), they each excellent in certain conditions and suffer in others. The differences between windsurfers and dinghies is pretty extreme and they will never really be able to race each other meaningfully but for a bit of fun why not.

It's against the rules is all. There's a load of rules for windsurf races which are different. Where do you stop? There's plenty of boats which are slow in the light and not in the breeze, doesn't mean they can cheat. I think it's pretty clear that if you're racing against others you'd race under the same rules, no? I know it's a PY race and the results are a joke, and to a certain extent people are racing under separate rules anyway (class rules). But, you should really race under the RRS and SIs for the given event surely?

I guess it depends what your motivation is. Our club wanted to encourage a young sailor, who happened to be on a board not a boat, to join in with the club and have opportunities to train in company rather than on his own.
Pumping for an hour in a club race certainly helped his endurance for the half hour races on the circuit. The only complaints about his pumping were cos of the noise! |

There seems no reason why a club shouldn't write a SI that permits pumping for boards but not boats, if that's what suits the needs of their membership.

And you'll never stop windsurfers from pumping, it's like breathing (that was the problem back in the day when I also opposed unlimited pumping). Pumping onto the plane is only like the Finns and if it's light the extra advantage the windsurfers get from pumping doesn't get close to making up for their inherent lack of speed in displacement mode.

Yeah, I don't think in real life I'd be bothered, it is what it is. Just pointing out the answer to the first question, that they shouldn't be pumping.
The real shame is he doesn't have anyone to have a proper race with. Can you not persuade him to dinghy race? Could be good cross training? He can hack around buoys in the harbour any night for as long or as short s he wants, but there will only be one night where he can race in like for like equipment and learn about strategy and tactics?

displacement mode. Oh yes it does !! .. but then you have to be uber-fit. |

Ok maybe in a real drifter, I was pretty good at it back in the day (at a regional level) but as you say, to benefit you need to be pretty damn fit
![]() Mozzy makes a good point above BTW though if he's young and a died in the wool windsurfer he will probably think dinghies are only for old people

He did helm a Tasar last winter, but he’s a windsurfer.
