The guys at HISC? They certainly know about yardsticks as they race dinghies. The two leading it sail an RS800 and RS200. But it just seems they don't want to be doing club racing with their boards. Instead they do run races off the beach. When it's really windy most just thrash up and down the narrow channels at low tide. I don't think it's anything to do with them being shut out of club racing, but just that dinghies are really good for racing in the harbour in moderate winds, and boards paddled or with a sail are better at other times. I think if a group of windsurfers could regularly put a fleet together of 7 or so board they'd be given a class start. |

It’s been done this year, I heard that one of the optional extras were some floaties for the rose tinted spectacles . Edited by turnturtle - 09 Nov 18 at 12:05pm |

That's completely understandable, I no longer get the same pleasure from racing a windsurfer now I have the hard earned skills required to sail a boat and especially if you have the social aspect of two up, but I do think we're missing a trick by not using racing free sail sports as part of the attraction and education of the younger or status seeking element into sailing and sailing competition, lots of the skills are transferable and one thing I have come to realise is exactly how close the two sports are in technique once you get over the sticks and rope issues. [QUOTE=Sam.Spoons] Raceboard sailing/racing is healthier than most dinghy classes if numbers are the measure with 122 taking part in this years UK open series. QUOTE]
Clearly this statement cannot be correct or is not correctly interpreting the numbers. Go around the 100s of sailing clubs in the UK and you will be lucky to see any raceboards racing regularly. In the last 30 years the only proper board racing I've seen when travelling around the UK are the RSXs at Weymouth. Id say the raceboard racing is almost dead compared to most dinghy classes. |

I had great times windsurfing on one of those but they seem to have messed it up with a retractable daggerboard. We used to just pull the dagger out downwind and put it on your arm ... ![]() The worst thing about it was the bloody mast foot popping out and smashing your shins whilst you uphauled th rig ... happy days.

20 raceboards at Datchet on Saturday.
Really great atmosphere. My son’s first time on raceboard and he really enjoyed it. |

Budworth get 10-15 Raceboards out regularly. Sure it's not as widespread as dinghies but there isn't a single class, apart from maybe Lasers, getting 10+ boats out at my home club.

There is no way boards could race with dinghies today - it would not be accepted so not much point in wishing for a PN. If you did generally allow 'shared' handicap racing would it be acceptable for a board on Starboard to have rights against a dinghy not allowed to pump out of the way etc ? No - it would be totally bonkers. Would a PN be based on boards allowed unlimited rights to pump ? Again - no way surely. The logic is simply flawed and would not lead to any revival on the back of 'shared' PN racing. Wind rowing is not sailing ....The board world is still in part denial over these sort of real world issues and still don't get it ... yet still wonder why the 'rank and file' who made up the vast majority voted with their feet and left board racing for good ! That the manufacturers stopped producing Div 1 style boards is because the market for them collapsed - the 'elite' simply were not numerous enough to justify continued developer/scale maker involvement..... Like so much in life you should always be really carefully what you wish for (or vote for ;-) ... Snake oil and mirages are always on offer and that tough school of unintended consequences is always open.

My son races his RS:X at Emsworth against the dinghies, with a PY similar to the RS400.
When it’s windy he wins by miles and when it’s not he’s last by miles. Everyone seems to enjoy themselves. Given that PY racing is just a bit of fun that should never be taken too seriously, it seems to work just fine! |

Surely they'd all be racing under the same rules racing rules? It wouldn't become a windsurf race.
