What a Mickey Mouse joke. Imagine this in F2
Ideal for a Beach Club competition on the last day of a holiday but for the Olympics ?... https://www.sailingillustrated.com/single-post/2018/11/01/2024-Olympics-Laser-Slalom-proposed-as-a-mixed-gender-event-%E2%80%93-add-the-scores-together-of-a-male-and-female-competitor-from-the-same-country-to-determine-the-Laser-medals?utm_campaign=16306541-4ca3-4679-8990-1f972ff63b2c&utm_source=so |

Discussion going on now...
Mixed gender single hander voted in on lobbying with a attitude that it could be worked out. Still no format has been found. Almost everyone agrees that offshore represents a large proportion of the sport, it's popular with the hosts, it's popular with the athletes, it allows all physiques and genders to compete on fairest setting. However... it small MNA will struggle to finance, leaving us with a submission that everyone thinks is stupid. So they vote and.... The change is made, mixed single-hander dropped, mixed offshore keelboat in.

I'm still unclear whether Luca's legal intervention is aimed getting the
laser reviewed, so the D-Zero can be considered, or whether it's a
retaliation to the threat against the Finn. Who
really knows .. but WS are unlikely to be compliant or sympathetic when having
their arms twisted if that is what is really happening! All WS
would need to do is reinforce any less than 100% rigorous 'process' already
in place, carefully set and word the criteria
and weighting awarded and it could be the Laser is retained (as many expect) ..
They (WS) do hold most of the important cards. Ironically
it might lead to the Aero replacing the Laser etc that would otherwise have been
retained. That would close down any
possibility of ‘change’ for at least a decade .. or more. Rattling the WS ‘cage’, if we are to believe
what is being suggested by some, could be really counter productive. A charm or logic offensive might be the best
route. Still deck chairs and crisps for the spectators do sound in order ... Edited by Cirrus - 02 Nov 18 at 6:12pm |

There's been anti SMOD feeling for some time from the medium size countries who still have semi cottage boat building industries that don't get a look in. Roughly speaking the small countries like SMods either way because they know they're almost certainly going to have to import anyway, and the large countries aren't bothered because their company may win.
Any proposal for conventional multi builder classes falls with the horrendous cost escalation such classes have at Olympic level, plus the tendency for such supply to turn into monopoly anyway. The only proposal I've seen which might have changed things was that which came from the Arup proposal for the ladies' skiff, which was to use ISO2000 QC techniques to ensure that no-one was permitted to build a better mousetrap. ISAF dismissed it at the time as unlikely to be workable. If the EU antitrust were to come down completely against SMODs then that might have to be revisited. Ironically, of course, anything which did successfully prohibit the better mousetrap would by no means be welcome to S. Devoti... |

Love to see how they’re going to keep the Israeli offshore boat safe.

In the discussion a fellow from the equipment committee did pick up on the SMOD debate and said they were looking at all ways of opening up the manufacture of existing classes.
I generally feel offshore will be better for the sport in terms of representing what happens outside the Olympics. I think it will be better for viewership and recruitment too. There's still questions about how accessible it will be and security... but I think it's far better than the mixed single hander with to concept for format. I'm still amazed that a format could be voted through which no-one understood or had heard of before, just to appease the class lobbyists. But... how will mixed single hander work in kitesurf? I'd be happy if that was lost and Finn reinstated in it's place.

Perhaps there ought to be a rotating slot the changes every cycle to showcase the latest new thing or an established minority discipline, kite foils in 2014, wave sailing or windsurf slalom in 2028 and so on?
