I'd be surprised if they had it specially manufactured. Even if they do, with 100% carbon windsurfing masts coming in around £400 at full retail it still sounds expensive. Firstly I'll bet the carbon content is only around 60% and it is untapered with a constant wall thickness so much easier to make than the aforementioned windsurfing mast. A 60% carbon WS mast retails at around £250. But the ally mast is not cheap either compared to the price of identical tube, it's just the price you pay for sailing an SMOD (and particularly a Laser).

D-One mast is all carbon with integrated carbon track - tapered - designed and manufactured for the D-One only! It's also very strong and durable - over the 9 years that the D-One has been around we've only had one reported breakage which happened in Australia when the guy decided to tow his boat home with the mast up
Cost of shipping the thing to Oz was more than the value of the mast top section! |

Which makes it sound very cheap compared to a Laser top section. And £1684 for a complete mast looks very reasonable compared to others (Blaze £998, Phantom £1199, Merlin £2233).
edit :- Sorry, that's Blaze £1998 and Phantom £2199.... Edited by Sam.Spoons - 11 Oct 18 at 4:29pm |

Plenty of examples here:
Zhik kit - boots especially. Any rope. Costs absolutely nothing to make. Sails - the material is so cheap to buy and chopping and stitching it back together and all of a sudden its worth hundreds or thousands more. |

And then factor in development costs especially in the OD classes where multiple sailmakers are permitted and the sail really can make a big difference.

I understand they spent some considerable time developing a layup that would give the closest possible match to the characteristics of the metal tube. So not just a custom manufacture, but also a lot of R&D to pay for. |

Will work out cheaper over time because it outlasts the ally top section.

TBF the windsurfing mast guys do the same thing and can sell theirs (which are longer tapered sections with a non-constant wall thickness) for significantly less money. Even if you assume they use lighter construction so less material the, typically, 4.6m length will offset the cost saving even without the more complex construction. Even if they have a copied the bend characteristics of the ally mast they are still selling a parallel sided constant wall thickness tube, and selling enough for the economies of scale to kick in to a certain extent at least. But, like I said, it's the price we pay for sailing SMOD.

Most windsurf masts are produced in OEM sweatshops to whatever design spec, and tolerance, the brand are prepared to pay for. Hence why third parties like Unifiber and Amex can undercut the Norths, Prydes and Severnes of the windsurf world.
Their R&D aims are completely different from the Laser- and none of them, except maybe Pryde, are putting anything back in to a sporting infrastructure. Even North, which was only ever a German company (behind Fanatic) were licensing the name of the sailing brand we know.... that’s come to an end now, AIUI, Duotone is the same tech with a different sticker on the OEM mast product.
