... and that's fine, each to their own.
But presenting it as the Great British Sailing Challenge is rather pretentious, given most folks acknowledge the limitations of the sporting context that is handicap racing. (Sorry dicking around with the numbers and a couple of GPS tracks won't change that... ever.) All that will happen is the industry and semi-pro sailors will feel obliged to enter as part of their marketing campaigns, thus further depleting their engagement in proper class regattas and the classes which provide the critical mass. I think that's a shame- one the beautiful things about going to a proper class event is racing on the same patch of water against folks far more skilled than most of us could ever be; I know I certainly don't like or welcome a spreadsheet blurring that sensation personally. I can't imagine for one minute someone good enough at sailboat racing to get free sails, or even more competent than that, who is cutting the damn things for a living; honestly believes any hype around handicap racing.... perhaps I'm wrong. So here's my Great British Sailing Challenge - find a cheap Laser, all in less than say, £2k - integrity rules. Send 'em all off at the same time anti-clockwise around the IoW - no f**king around with handicaps. Let's really have a challenge if you're going to use such a grand moniker!

Why a Laser? Have nothing against them and I tried to sail them as a youth when I was in the RYA squad with the guys who went on to win many Olympic titles...but at 95kg I would be happier if we agreed to all buy Finns.
Oh you are too small and weak to sail a Finn....Ah ok....guess we are back to handicap then. You see until everyone is the same size and weight we might need to accept that people want to sail something that is not a Laser or a Solo.

you can choose whatever you like... I was speaking facetiously. I think we already know which classes constitute a decent enough challenge to get even a mid fleet result in the plurality that is UK and International dinghy sailing.
But hey, you know what.... there's really nothing wrong with a few noddy classes jumping on the bandwagon of some spreadsheet racing and getting Mel and Sue to present the prizes if it makes them feel all fluffy. ![]() Edited by turnturtle - 03 Oct 18 at 2:11pm |

OK, we get it TT that you are not a fan of handicap racing and I respect your views even if I do not agree. Would your objection change if the title of the event was different or are you just going to dig in that encouraging the great British public to go sailing at some events around the UK will be the end of all that you hold dear and should be fought at all costs? Barhumbug.

I guess I just don't see the point in the whole exercise.... an umbrella series on what were interesting, unique and well established events in winter barely made sense, but it makes even less sense in summer as others have already pointed out.
I'm sure it will be deemed a success - irrespective of what is said on here.

if the events stand on their own merit, and if by chance putting them under an umbrella of a "national series" they continue and if fact attract more to those events, then it can only be deemed a failure if by attracting those new entrants from their od roots. But if they're attracting them across then surely something is wrong with those particular roots?
hadicap events are getting something right, as are some od classses, but why is there no true od national series or league like club football? surely that would be the ultimate marker, with league divisions and clubs qualify by entering their sailors as a "squad" (sort of like the british keelboat league but in lasers and more venues). Do it in lasers to keep costs down and restrict divisions by boat value. That along with some fun handicap events throughout the year is what id like to see.

I guess its a signifier of consolidation - one which drive further consideration if club membership becomes something no longer valued.... and let's be honest, most people utilise clubs for cheap real estate for their boats rather than the racing judging by the series turnouts on their publicly available results archives.
Success in failure maybe? But if handicap racing is pretty much going to be the core offering going forward, I can't see many folks returning to sailing when they get older like they have in generations past.

if the marketing is to be believed in the future these dinghies will all tessellate together into a single container and thus the problem is solved

I think if people really did sail at these events through the summer, might they all just migrate toward a consolidation of classes? I mean, if you're not holding out for class racing in the summer, why not buy the best performing cheapest boat out of the selection you see before you? It seems these events are probably the most threat toward small class with 10 boat open meetings and 20 boat nationals. If it kills off those small class events then there could well be a consolidation.
I like a handicap 'event', mostly pursuit races. They can be fun. But someone winning a handicap race has never made me sit up and think 'gosh, so and so is really a great sailor'. I just kind of wish they would push more of their considerable publicity and resources toward class racing.

This thread is becoming very fractious.
This could be a good platform to publicise Minisails, probably won't meet the criteria though. |
