I suppose 'established classes' are 'established' for a good reason, boats like the Ent and Fireball got the formula right 50+ years ago (for the average sailor at least). Singlehanders were relatively unusual until the L@ser came along. I guess lifestyle/demographic changes over the intervening years have led to a big increase in sailors choosing singlehanders which in turn has led to new designs having a better chance of success.

Had to go look those up - probably not a singlehander was the big issue? Not sure why but most crewed boats seem to be dominated by established classes whereas there are a number of newer singlehanders trying to get established???
