I don’t expect anyone to declare that one is better than the other, but can anyone explain the difference between the main brands of Solo sail?  How does the HD differ from the North, P&B or Edge - why would pick one over the others?

There are differences in the shaping of the panels and seam layouts.
Remember that there's a range of masts used (different bend charistics), and different makers may have different views.
People tend to use the same year as the top competition sailors, which explains the sponsorship.
Really depends on your expected use..

But they all concentrate mainly on the d+ mast - so how can I find out the differences between makes.  If I’m going to spend the best part of £1000 on a new sail, I want to understand how the choices differ not just pick the fashionable choice.

I use a North P2 on a D+ ... works well for me.  Frankly the HD, North and P&B are all competitive, all of the lofts have their proponents and offer good support.  You are heading for the Autumn/Winter discount season, so might be worth waiting.

Only by asking the sailmakers and sailors (which is, obviously, what you're doing here). I don't know if you are a mid fleet club sailor or usually top 3 on the circuit (if the latter please ignore all that follows Embarrassed) but it's probably worth trying to find out which of the top guys are a similar height/weight/build to you then analyse their results. When you find the guy who does best at venues like your club ask what hull/rig he sails and buy it. It's not guaranteed to work, he may have a wildly unorthodox sailing style but, while it may not get you winning the nationals, it should mean your boat/rig is capable of winning at that level.

Not sure if that helps.........

The last time I ordered a Solo sail, we discussed the mast type, my weight and style of sailing. Because I sail inland, we sacrificed a bit of fullness to gain pointing.
Also worth discussing choice of materials.

If your sailmaker doesn't do this type of discussion, move to one who will!

Then most obvious difference between HD and the others is the choice of sailcloth.  The HD website explains why they have gone for the MAXX gold cloth and what properties they claim for it, i.e. faster in some specific conditions.  I switched to a HD and Zeta from a Technora sailcloth /D+ rig when I changed my boat from Mk2 to Mk1A.  Yes, it seems faster off the wind.  But is that down to the different hull shape,  the mast, the sail or lucky breaks?

Edit: Oh and the previous and subsequent owners of my old boat have been the top five of championships with the rig I moved away from....

I have set up a few solo rigs now and been working on the running rigging/control systems a fair bit. Looking at the options the North sail is far more adaptable than the other options.

FTFY

I suspect there will be very little difference other than that which is made by the Pro Jocks that ride them and in truth anyone of them could probably do just as well using another sail.

Anything over 500 for a Solo sail has to be downright robbery unless it's built in unobtainium cloth.

A far better investment as I've said before would be a set of advanced racing tactics manuals.

If you want to try something next time you race, deliberately start 10 secs early and see how you get on, if they catch you before you get to the first mark then a new sail is not going to help you. If they finally catch you at the bottom of the first two legs then maybe a new sail might help.

I disagree..

If you get the luff curve to leach ratio correct then the sail has a wider range of shape. The north radial sail will set better flatter and fatter than the P&B and the HD options.

Not just jockies, there is also science.
