Surprised to see only 26 boats

Penzance is pretty cool venue. Fleet normally gets 50+ boats. Open circuit seems strong.

What's going on? Clash with Solos and Lasers? But I'd imagine the main fleets they'd share sailors with are Merlins, GP14s and 505s?

I would have thought that the GP14 Worlds being the following week at Mounts Bay would have upped the Fireball numbers with sailors wanting to get venue and big fleet experience? But maybe don't have the leave?

Any insider knowledge?

Worlds in Carnac in September would be my guess.

Support for the 'Ball has collapsed down here over the last decade. It's a pity - a while back it seemed to be a great example of a traditional class that changed its rules to good effect.

Reflected in the second hand market too - it seems you cant give even the good entry level boats away these days.

It is also the 505 worlds at the moment, so that may have pulled a few people away - at least Gillard

They can still get 10+ boats out on a Sunday morning at Draycote when the weather is good- which isn't a bad effort given more people are focused on single handers than ever before.

It's a shame if the class does dwindle further, they are great fun to sail but never really seem to have bounced back from the asymmetric stabbing they took in the 90's.

They've had a renaissance at HISC the past 3 years, with their own class start. usually see about 5 out each weekend, possibly 10 on a good weekend.

I thought about getting in one before the 800. But with limited time and that both my crew and I have history in asymmetric it made sense to stick to what we knew with the 800.
