Some good analysis here: https://www.sail-world.com/news/205315/Top-skippers-speak-out-in-vain-on-2024-options

"The fact remains that the Mixed One-Person Dinghy event is a complete nonsense in practice, and is too much of a crapshoot to attract serious Olympic campaigns."

From the sounds of things it does seem the Finns shoehorned themselves in there, to save the classes Olympic spot, without much thought of what a 'crapshoot' the event would be. Don't get me wrong, I like the finn, but it seems they voted/lobbied for retaining the finn in the olympics at all costs, rather than retaining a specific event for heavyweight males.

Interesting from Ian Walker in the comments:
"isn't one problem that the class associations have too much power and can influence the voting for their own benefit rather than the bigger picture or what is best for sailing and sailors as a whole in the long run? ... if we do not come up with a viable solution to what mixed singlehanded means I fear Council may have just voted for 9 medals instead of 10."

I did think that too!

The video is cool but doesn't convince me that it's an Olympic sport. There quite a lot of videos of kite-surfing in glamorous locations, which looks epic on a well edited highlight reel.

Interestingly, Johnny Heineken was racing at the 29ers worlds I did there. I think we either went to his or his crews house for a party on the last night. The police cleared us out to complete the full American house party cliche.

Has the 470 actually already been dropped? The first part of the Y&Y report states that for the mixed doublehander "new equipment must be selected".

So no 470?
Europe AUS53 & FF 3615
National 12 3344, Europe 397 and Mirror 53962 all gone with regret

No reason I'm aware of why existing classes shouldn't be selected.

It's somewhere over the rainbow, where they weigh pies.

This is simply a classic example of decision by committee - a compromise that was intended to allow all the existing classes to remain whilst improving the gender balance. But quite how so many people could have sat in a room for so long with so little idea about what they were voting for is disappointing. The delegates may have been tired, thirsty and keen to go home but they had a responsibility to understand what they were voting for - and clearly they didn’t. A ‘Mixed One-Person Dinghy’ is not an event, it’s a headline with no substance.

I am in favour of the different Olympic events actually being different events rather than the same event (fleet racing) in different classes. History has shown that a good Laser fleet racer is also a good fleet racer in boats as diverse as Finns and Stars. New events that test different skills and require new tactics should be welcomed - team racing, match racing, long distance racing, relay racing, elimination racing all offer something different. The Mixed One-Person Dinghy event has the potential to be something innovative and exciting, but without any detail behind it how could it possibly be recommended?
