I really love the fact that you get EPIC sailors battling it out in the finn. Next to the laser, you really get a quality field of sailor, using pretty advanced technology - Even though it is an old class, it leads the way in mast design but everyone has pretty much the same kit and so battles it out really hard.
With Slingsby having a crack in the finn this year it will be interesting to see him line up against Giles. I am sure he will give him some bloody good racing. 

The finn class will get these legends racing this year and I will continue to follow and watch the racing, because the sailing between these legends is truly awesome and still inspires me!!

Is the issue about gender equality?  That there cannot be more "Men only" than "Women only" classes?  In that case I can see where the Finn runs into trouble.

Whilst I wonder why WS has got involved in kite surfing, upon reflection talk to many crusty old dinghy sailors in the bar, and many say if they had their time again they would be Kite Surfing.

I do wonder about the future of boardsailing, I am sure GF could provide the figures, but it does appear to be a busted flush, with many of the industry players bailing out ... so how much longer is it going to be relevant?  I wonder if Kite Surfing should not simply have replaced boardsailing which really is not at all photogenic.

Get rid of the 470, long in the tooth, heavy, overly technical, and replace it with a mixed 2 person skiff.

If I had a say, which I don't, I would be scrapping the Finn, the Laser and the Laser Radial classes, and getting a designer like Phil Morrison, Jo Richards or Dan Holman to design a family of supplied skiff style single handers that worked over two mens weight ranges; Heavy Weight Men, Light Weight Men, Heavy Weight Woman and Light Weight Woman; forget the class names ... concentrate on the weight ranges, which Joe Public would understand.

Both windsurfing and kite-surfing seem to be more sporty activities then competitive sports. I'm not sure there is the groundswell of racing in either that warrant an event at the Olympics. 

The thing is, the 470, lasers and finn to me represent best what people do actually race. Then I'd keep the skiffs. People may debate the true definition of skiff, but the type of racing I see in the 49ers is certainly recognisable from asymmetrics generally which are still hugely popular. 

The cats are what I find least appealing. I also think the move to foiling was a little too soon. Watching it seems a little hap hazard. But I still think a cat should be in the Olympics. 

So my core events would be:
Female lightweight single hander (<60)
Female heavyweight SH (>60)
Male lightweight SH (<75)
Male heavyweight SH (>75)
Symetric 2 person male (470)
Symetric 2 person female (470)
Asymetric 2 person male (49er)
Asymetric 2 person female (FX)
Non-foiling cat 2 person mixed 

That's one less event that suggested. I would like to see a keelboat. Mixed crew match racing or a short offshore race. I see the difficulties in getting this to an Olympics though.

Over 200 entries at 2016 windsurf course racing nationals. Don’t have the figures for last year, but numbers were similar.

was about to comprise a list very similar to yours there mozzy for many of the same reasons except id have mix sexed two person boats and the diam 24 for an offshore series like the tour de france.

Worth noting that in 1972 there were only two dinghy classes in the Olympics, the Finn and the FD, this was augmented by the 470 until 1988, so now sailors are rather spoilt for choice

Why WS is in kitesurfing? Hmm smells money maybe? The old ISAF used to charge windsurfing companys a fee for having a sticker on the boards enabling them to race we still suffer from not being able to have local builders because of the minimums required. So in their eyes watching tens of thousands of kiteboards being made and not a sticker to be seen... The other reason they virtually blackmailed a bunch of kiteboard speed sailors into joining to have their then world record ratified, I think sail rocket has it back now if you can call that contraption sailing. 

However there are more legitimate governing bodys that will contest it, nobody has forgotten how they were picked up sold a load of bollox including RYA taking over in this country with about as much know how as a lettuce, then dropping them a few months later.. nobody trusts yotties in fact it could fairly be said we (with my kite hat on hate them and all they stand for, come to think of it I can pretty much wear my dinghy hat as well).

As to numbers it's been pretty static for some while, you don't see us (windsurfers) because we don't hold events at sailing clubs much if at all. I'm not sure what happened but the UK governing body fell out with the RYA (not difficult) some time after the windsurfing management committee was dropped (we used to try and iron out difficulties in the name of keeping windsurfing in the sailing club fold but there was never a lot of reciprocity and it was always the b**tard child ) Racing does still occurr and there are some pretty big events that numbers wise will dwarf most dinghy classes other than oppis and lasers, you just don't see them because they are not on the radar.

Had I been younger I too would have put some effort behind kite racing as I did for most of my windsurfing life, it wasn't an accident that windsurf racing carried on longer than it might naturally have done. Kiting has never had that unified effort from everyone, business, training, race enthusiasts coupled to a sponsor with equal enthusiasm, it also suffers with low level corruption and hence no trust exists between those that might help and those that are doing the job but with an eye only on lining their pockets. There was also a feeling of better a slightly anarchic set up than have the RYA involved who would corporatise the teaching/training as they did in windsurfing which would remove the enthusiast shop/school approach that we are so desperate to try and rebuild after the financial crash, something I'm quietely still working on using the strength of my new brand to try and ward off the internet.

So that's my knowledge and as for your post I totally agree, what a great opportunity being missed, think how many labels they could get on new boats if they did it right and those sailing leg ends, they could do just as well in new craft as old in fact if it was done professionally it could transform the entire scene.

Recent SA video of kite racing off Crissy Field might convince the most dyed in the wool dinghy racers that kite surfing may be the way forward ...
