My allen self bailed on my topper leaks, either through the plunger part or somewhere else. 

I have bought a topper blanking plate. 

Does anyone know how to fit it?

I haven't seen one but does it not just replace the bailer? The bailer is fixed by 6 nuts and bolts, there is a rubber gasket between it and the hull and a rebate on the hull so it sits flush. There should be no need for any sealant if the new gasket (which I assume os supplied with the blanking plate......) is in good order.

Some blanking plates fit into the bailer housing in place of the chute. Undo the screws that hold the top and bottom halves of the bailer together; remove the chute assembly; replace with the blanking plate; screw it all back together again. I believe it can be done whilst the bailer is still in the boat, but probably easier if you take it out of the boat first. It's the older allen bailer, im going to have a look tonight and see what's what. 
Ive had duck tape over the bottom which has lasted a surprisingly long time but during a race last week she started filling up slowly!

All the answers assume that it is the Super Chute bailer, and your blanking plate is almost certainly for that.

The older Allen bailer was very different. I think it may still possible to get that bailer from Allen though it is a couple of years since i tried. You used to be able to buy it with or without the stainless steel guard and one of those options was discontinued. However, the Allen bailer does not have a non return flap, which limits its appeal. Your practical answer is probably to make your own blanking plate to replace the bailer. Make sure that the hull to deck join is properly sealed at the bailer hole.

Why not just re-seal existing or fit new bailer, your race is over if you capsize.

I bought an Allen Gold bailer a few months ago.

Oddly, capsizing can be the only way of emptying the boat if you get swamped and have no bailer. A cut down plastic milk bottle tied in can work well, though.

hi guys,

Thanks for your input, I searched everywhere to no avail on the net!

I had a look a couple of the club boats yesterday and they have blanking plates, but indeed do look a bit different.

I managed to buy a rebuild kit for the allen bailer. I have replaced the plunger seal which was absolutely shot, however I haven't been able to test it yet. There was also a gasket seal in the kit, but I haven't fitted this yet.

If this fails I will go back to my duck tape. Well actually it's a product called Maxam glass repair film. I was astonished at how well it was still stuck on when I took it off yesterday considering ive sailed with it on 7 or 8 times and I always drag my boat up the slip way.

I tried the milk bottle cut in half but I didn't tie it on, so it's now at the bottom of the sea somewhere, sorry david Attenborough!

It seems mad to spend £50 on a boat which cost me £220.
