The "move 100 handicaps so one can stay in place" argument raises it's head once more...

And there was I thinking this was a thread about buttons.

Its all relative - 25 years ago when I was a lad the Laser Nationals at Weymouth were a very big deal and most clubs in the land had significant fleets sailing each weekend. Laser is still a global brand but I see one sailed occasionally in races at our club and very few at Great Lake events. How many Lasers at the nationals last year? Most seem to be growing weeds.

don't fall into that trap H2.... add the Masters Nationals (radial + std) to the Youth Nationals (radial + std) then you get the true picture of quite how seriously the Laser remains contended at national level.

Of course, this leaves a gapping great hole in the 21-39 range (? guessed ages, should probably research before posting) ... but that's the time in a sailing career to rubbish the laser, source some fine cloth for the emperor's gown, rub shoulders with people who somehow find bona fide competition in a spreadsheet or simply bugger it all off completely and go kitesurfing in between spawning, nesting and ascending into higher rate tax payer status.

I guess you could keep a Laser and sail it at a local club and do a few open meetings etc... but that does seem a dour way to go sailing when there is so much promise elsewhere.

..... It should be the permanent '1000' and everything else should be re-ordered around it....

Some used to say the heavens rotated around the Earth as well ... Why oh why does anyone need to do this either ?    What is the statistical logic ?  Could there ever have been a 'Pre-Laser' time me thinks and what about the fast approaching 'Post-Laser' future if you really must tie yourselves and your sailing world view to a dead or dying 'benchmark'.

Far be it from me to support the activity, but our lot do get a perverse enjoyment out of their collective suffering it does populate the fleet and helps build the activity in general, if you encourage someone to 'have a go' it's easy to bung em in a Laser and or it serves as a means of getting crewless helms out there.

My beef is that it isn't used more as a rock upon which the racing handicap system could be founded. It should be the permanent '1000' and everything else should be re-ordered around it, use it's popularity to provide some stability in a confusing and confounding system that repels as many folk as it's designed to attract.
