In a Finn the kicker is for downwind and is let off upwind so you can get under the boom when you tack, the boom is on the deck so no need for kicker you change rake to get the correct leech tension. it looks choppy so agressively over steering works well, same technique as in a laser if you steer so fast that the boat does not have time to change course, the boat will slip side ways on the top of the wave stoppping it form tripping over, he will also need to steer quite wide angles to keep the best course through the waves. the timing is the same as it would be if you let go but exagerated. its as big as most double there is plenty of space, lovely boat, very easy to sail hard to race. |

HOW low is that boom!! I wouldnt be able to get my gut under that!! Or do they ease the kicker when tacking? Or is it just a hiking boat thing? |

djdhi I think the rudder thingy is much the same technique as on the Rooster boat whisperer DVD. If the boat is heeled slightly (is he heeled enough for this to be the case?), a push on the tiller lifts the bow and a pull lifts the transom thus helping the boat over the waves. Looks like he is on the crest and pulling the rudder to get the bow down without slapping. Looks like he's twisting his torso forward as well, further aiding the boat over the wave..... Mentioned in this article on upwind kinetics:- http://www.roostersailing.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen= upkin&Store_Code=1 ......having never sailed a Finn I could be completely wrong however Mind you my ability in any boat is probably best explained as a combination of coincidence and blind luck. It is a physical boat. It is what you do. This is what sailing is like if you are a big guy sailing a Finn. Steering both upwind and downwind is a huge part of the game. The key thing is getting the rudder movement at the appropriate time. You need to see the movie to understand what is really going on, the still image is pretty unhelpful. The design is what it is. Not sure that if you wanted to design a boat to be sailed by big guys on their own you would come up with much different. The fact is big guys love the Finn. I think the photo explains why.
