Nice report from h2 on his H2. So all you gentlemen who have had a huge amount to say on this dinghy, come to the Hadron H2 Class association stand at the Dinghy show 3rd 4th March. I have been reliably informed there will be an H2 on the stand. Come and talk to the people who actually own one . It will be a pleasure to see you all. The Class is up to 30 boats now and increasing.

To be fair to the Hadron, the Aero and D-Zero do sleek, the Hadron H2 has a high enough freeboard to keep your bum out of the water and allows your legs to stretch out.  Boom is high enough not to bang your head, and I suspect that the rig could be quite sweet if you have worked out the settings, particularly of the adjustable forestay, more than my couple of hours on a windy day allowed me to do.

What I can attest to, is that she is a dream to sail downwind on a windy day, gybes were approached with trepidation, but completed easily.  I can also attest that she is easy to right after capsizing following a fluffed tack.

Keith has targeted the Hadron at a quite tight niche of I would suggest; technical more mature sailors who are looking for a comfortable, relatively dry and non headbanging single hander with a Merlin like experience upwind, with some boat bimbling potential, something that he has achieved.

It ain't the cheapest single hander around, and the only reason I have not parted with the cash is there are not nearly 6000 of them around offering class racing and trips to Garda ... however I would still seriously consider a Hadron H2 when I no longer can be bothered to attend championships.

A lot of this is down to essential design compromises. If you want a generous beam and decent roll tacking capability then its inevitable that you'll end up with a fair bit of freeboard, even more so if you've got flare on the topsides so the waterline beam isn't excessive. Otherwise the boat just collects a load of water on every tack.

I had a sail in one at the Blaze Nationals. They seemed quick and when the wind blew looked very controllable. One very noticeable aspect is comfort. Much more depth in the cockpit and clearance when tacking. I suspect this will be one of those boats that quietly sells in steady numbers.

I am a new H2 owner and thought I might just add the voice of a user to this post. Some background - I am in my mid 40s and have sailed since I was a kid coming up through the RYA youth squads in 420s and Lasers. Most recently I have been sailing a RS400 with my teenage son who recently decided he wanted to get into Lasers leaving me crewless. I sail on a pond with a large fleet of Solos but also an active handicap fleet. At 95 kg I am too big for a Solo and I did not want a singlehander with a kite as the pond is too small to really use it. I did consider the likes of the Phantoms and other large singlehanders but when I tested the H2 my mind was quickly made up.

I am quite fit - like running half marathons but am just a big lad. In a breeze I love the fact that I can hike like a madman and with the beam of an H2 I am almost planing upwind. Downwind in a breeze it is great fun but incredibly stable so long as you keep enough kicker on. Seems very stable in gybes in a blow too.

Where I am struggling is in the light stuff where I just have not cracked the right set up / balance between boat speed and pointing and we get killed on PY. This will improve in time as we all work out how to sail the boat. Luckily we have two H2s at the club allowing so two boat tuning and maybe a third soon to come.

Looked very good in the big winds on the Saturday and gave us Blaze's a run.

Yes, it's true. Mike Dickinson of Desilco sailing has generously allowed us space on his stand (G20, West hall). In fact, the H2 virtually fills the stand. Come and give it a look-over - and book your club demo weekend with us
