Can it really be ‘out of class’... or just adjusted back to ‘in class’ when needed?

I don't know why some fourmitz get all strange about the concept of in or our of class.

If you sail with the wrong manufacture of block in some classes you are out of class.

The 3.7 has an agreement in it's rules to allow boats to be built without weight penalty if the builder wishes to build with an Asymmetric spinnaker. You currently can't race with the Kite in 3.7 class races, but as the open meeting circuit in the UK is yet to develop, this really isn't an issue. Nor would it be when we have an Open meeting circuit. iGRF just doesn't use his kite.

The hull is a strict one design but there is significant flexibility with rigging foil shape etc...

So in reality it is very unlikely that iGRF could 'butcher' his boat and take it out of class. If he wants to sail with a kite in club races that's fine. The club will guess a handicap number and all will be good. All of the clubs where 3.7's are racing are using personnel handicaps to my knowledge anyway.

I haven't 'butchered' anything I've just 'dewoodified' and stealthed it a bit so I can actually stand next to it and not be embarrassed or catch wood poisoning and when my hard core kiting mates see me punching upwind they won't laugh like drains and try to jump over me. This may be the dawn of the Farr Firewire, full carbon deck, 'firewire' 'techtanium' rigging, v foil 'afterburner'... you never know..

No getting all strange; I understand that you can fit the hardware and count it as hull weight.

iGRF's initial posts seemed to suggest it was 'perfectly legal' to race it as a 3.7, off a 3.7 handicap, with a kite to increase performance. Which certainly is against class rules and was ironic given his recent thread on the National 18 and claiming people were out of class in a handicap race, so deserved a little poke; I'm sure iGRF doesn't mind!

It turns out he will tell the RC and they will give him some other number and he will race it as a '3.7+' which I guess is fine with everyone.

Totally agree Jack." I don't know why some fourmitz get all strange about the concept of in or our of class."

To my mind it is solely the business of the class concerned. Lord knows how many pages of fabricated outrage over that N18 and to their credit and my respect the N18s kept quiet.

The Farr seem to state their position on variables clearly enough and good on 'em.

Er.. it doesn't have a handicap yet, not even an E number or whatever they give it, the class is f**ked now anyway as 'farr' as getting a decent handicap is concerned now I'm riding one, I'm fully expecting a sub 1000 special from the buffers on the conspiracy to protect group.

I'm sure your own results will in fact give it hefty shove in the other direction ... just make sure your club puts in those returns next time round  ..... LOL

(PS - of course if that does not work I'm sure you could negotiate a 'good' deal the GL guys .. you know you want to  ! ....)

I can on some classes, but the Farr ain’t one of them. Good luck to Graeme and all seriousness, I hope his fascination for chasing a rather meaningless number on an RYA spreadsheet doesn’t detract from the pleasure of owning something unique, but within a framework of like-minded enough owners and ‘early adopters’.

These 3.7's look pretty good for the likes of me. I mean, I'm so light/skinny that I look like a piece of string when I walk down a beach!
It's always the wood thing that gets me though... too much work, the need to grow an unruly beard and own tools like 'bradawls' and a 'woodplane'.
Now this un-wooded creation looks just the ticket ......Though just to ruin things I'd go amazingly UNstealth  Big smile

I'm going to take a good look when I'm at the show. You going to be on the stand with it GRF?
