I should add... that it's only going to be a bit nosey trapezing hard off wind in the nastiest short chop, and all you'd do is sit in and hike it and go deeper.

It's a long time since I visited Lyme and that was back in my water ski days, but from memory Lyme has quite a well defined and spaced wave length, our problem up here is a very nasty steep but short chop, which in a south westerly on starboard out to sea has you bucking like a clown in a rodeo even in boats with quite long waterline length, it is Contender Country when it's windy.
I'm thinking of to hell with it I'll give it a go anyway, and keep the EPS for lightwind days, it sounds like sailing a windsurfing short board which means banging the corners which I don't really like having to do at Hythe as more often than not it's a one sided beat and often the confined side is the one to go. |

I can honestly say that I have not noticed the lack of length being a problem for me at Lyme (add your own witty comments here!). If you have the big waves that Lyme is famous for then chances are that you also have wind and will be trapezing and therefore will also be planing, so length becomes less important (or again here!). I guess it might be slightly easier to get it wrong downwind on broad reaches but my last A over T was down to incompetence (again!) and not bothering to put my foot in the loop going down over a wave and thus slipping forward, loosing my balance and over we go. Upwind in waves when on the trapeze is a joy and you wouldn’t notice the length issue at all. So I really don’t think that 3.7 metres is a problem. The same sadly can’t be said of my arthritis which means I can’t now get across from one side of the boat to the other quickly enough, but that is another story. |
