Couple of us are building these in SoCal, plans in hand, ply order placed, build box's filling garages.
Why pick it when we don't yet have a OD fleet? It's a pretty boat that fills a niche - home built single handed trapeze boat that will easily go on car roofs while we trailer the family boats behind. Going to build Spinnaker ready hulls even if we don't put the spinnakers on right away. It took a while to find the 'right' boat and it's possible there are better designs for our purposes but it will be good enough and fun to play with! |

Have a look at the results and see if you feel the same way? The results from Lyme are for 2 (3) sailors that are new to trapezeing. All in mixed handicap fleets.

Yes, and why I'm hesitating at the thought of sailing the Farr 37 in a handicap fleet, I think it will be difficult to sail generally from a mixed line, never mind performing to handicap, but then it could also be described as a Challenge which as you can perhaps tell I'm in very mixed feeling about. |

1st rule isn't it? Get clear at the start, it can and has been done coming from behind, but it's much easier winning races if you start clear ahead and don't have to muddle with other boats messing up your wind and options. Yes, of course, that's my point. And that's easier to do if you are in a handicap fleet sailing something quicker off the mark than most of the competition than if you are sailing in a class! That seems to be the logic of the choices of boat you've been discussing earlier in this thread.

Truth told I'd probably do a whole lot better sailing a laser if I were after the chocolates such that they are, but why having had so much nicer sailing experiences would I want to regress to that crappy sail, garbage mast, stupid sheeting, sloppy soft heavy plastic tub when I've sampled better just because others want to penny pinch and sail 700 quid sh*tters, it's not my idea of fun, in fact I'd go as far as to say if that were all there was I'd give up and do something else. Lasers ffs. |

Sadly, there are more and more former dual handers resorting to Lasers so they litter the start line, at present they don't present that much of a problem because the EPS when it's functioning can clear them albeit slowly, my concern is the short length of the Farr will make it next to impossible.
Why don't I join them? It sounds as though the real reason you don't join them is that you prefer having something that will get you out in front from the start, so you don't have to deal with all that difficult stuff about making clear air for yourself in a fleet? |

Indeed it probably would be, in fact I could envision a fleet of Farr 37s splitting and on one tack the helms could wire whilst the other they couldn’t.

The Farr is very good for using the lee-bow effect ...

Why don't I join them? How many times do you need to be told? The Laser is a hunk of junk, simply disgusting to sail imv and I'd rather not thanks. There are however Contenders that do most of the winning most of the time and I do fancy one, I just don't fancy getting a hernia dragging one up the beach. So the Farr wins on being dragged up the beach, it wins on being nicer to sail (even though I've never been in one it's easy to see why) what is in doubt are it's ability to sail wide angles at speed (which is I assume how it does do well when it does well) in our horrible short steep chop and how it will fare in light weather off the line in a fleet of Lasers.
