The Farr is very good for using the lee-bow effect ...

Indeed it probably would be, in fact I could envision a fleet of Farr 37s splitting and on one tack the helms could wire whilst the other they couldn’t.

For anyone so bothered about numbers think on these, lightweight equations. E is effort, F is fun.
 (5' 3" @ 65 kg) X f4 hiking a Laser =  E > F
 (5' 3" @ 65 kg) X f4 wiring an 3.7 =  E< F

Well in that case none of us would be sailing dinghies.

Come on man, if you're going quote me to contradict feel free but please do it in full so as to keep my context and light hearted nature.

Okay okay, not proper maths but come on people let's have some joy in our lives.

Sadly, there are more and more former dual handers resorting to Lasers so they litter the start line, at present they don't present that much of a problem because the EPS when it's functioning can clear them albeit slowly, my concern is the short length of the Farr will make it next to impossible.

Why don't I join them?

It sounds as though the real reason you don't join them is that you prefer having something that will get you out in front from the start, so you don't have to deal with all that difficult stuff about making clear air for yourself in a fleet?

1st rule isn't it? Get clear at the start, it can and has been done coming from behind, but it's much easier winning races if you start clear ahead and don't have to muddle with other boats messing up your wind and options. Truth told I'd probably do a whole lot better sailing a laser if I were after the chocolates such that they are, but why having had so much nicer sailing experiences would I want to regress to that crappy sail, garbage mast, stupid sheeting, sloppy soft heavy plastic tub when I've sampled better just because others want to penny pinch and sail 700 quid sh*tters, it's not my idea of fun, in fact I'd go as far as to say if that were all there was I'd give up and do something else. Lasers ffs.

Yes, of course, that's my point. And that's easier to do if you are in a handicap fleet sailing something quicker off the mark than most of the competition than if you are sailing in a class! That seems to be the logic of the choices of boat you've been discussing earlier in this thread.

Yes, and why I'm hesitating at the thought of sailing the Farr 37 in a handicap fleet, I think it will be difficult to sail generally from a mixed line, never mind performing to handicap, but then it could also be described as a Challenge which as you can perhaps tell I'm in very mixed feeling about.

Have a look at the results and see if you feel the same way? The results from Lyme are for 2 (3) sailors that are new to trapezeing. All in mixed handicap fleets.

You'll have to hunt around a bit for the results from Lyme Regis S.C

Couple of us are building these in SoCal, plans in hand, ply order placed, build box's filling garages.

Why pick it when we don't yet have a OD fleet? It's a pretty boat that fills a niche - home built single handed trapeze boat that will easily go on car roofs while we trailer the family boats behind. Going to build Spinnaker ready hulls even if we don't put the spinnakers on right away.

It took a while to find the 'right' boat and it's possible there are better designs for our purposes but it will be good enough and fun to play with!

Hi Thomas, welcome! Great to see you found this thread from all the way over in California. Keep the questions coming on the Facebook 3.7 Building page too! It all helps build the knowledge base! Happy building!  Smile Can't wait to see the first pics!
