You can manage a Contender? I'm not so different a tad taller and a tad lighter but I figured I'd not manage it once the wind crested 12 knots. It's a Contender I'd like, but with a more manageable rig and half it's dead weight. |

Realistically you're only a foot too short to sail a Radial ;) I should sell the Spice and buy an Ent for me and my occasional crew, we'd do much better but sailing the Spice, even as badly as we do, is FUN...... :)

I take your point iGRF, each to his own. I'm a slightly perverse soul, we are far too light for my two man boat. Once into a full f4 we're only hanging in there, depowered and doing the best we can but then turning the top corner it's all about giving it large with the kite to see if we can pull em back.
And the Contender, well......................., 5' 4" 75kgs and a senior railcard, it's been the best fun ever though. Of course we'd do better in a fireball or 420 and solo I really should sail a Laser Radial or Streaker, BUT.

I'm unfortunately the type of person that does not sail these things for 'fun' in the exhilaration meaning of the word, my enjoyment is the competitive element so yes being able to stay ahead of Lasers off the line is important. It's unlikely I'll beat them on handicap anyway, but at least finishing ahead of them is some consolation.
If I want exhilaration I have a kite or sailboard they are exhilarating in a fun sense but boring fairly quickly once the limitations of age and injury potential are considered. I need to have a go in one in a race environment I guess, one of these days I'll see one somewhere and blag a go. Edited by iGRF - 19 Oct 17 at 7:20pm |

So, it won't beat a Laser in non wiring conditions, so what? Sure as eggs is eggs though it'll be more fun for less grind the breeze is in.
For anyone so bothered about numbers think on these, lightweight equations. E is effort, F is fun. (5' 3" @ 65 kg) X f4 hiking a Laser = E > F (5' 3" @ 65 kg) X f4 wiring an 3.7 = E< F Okay okay, not proper maths but come on people let's have some joy in our lives.

If you are the sort of person that can only focus on, if it will beat a Laser in non wiring conditions, it's not the boat for you. (iGRF - BTW, you are very light, so you'd be wiring early).

I missed one on Apollo recently thanks to wedding expenses of No 1 daughter, I hesitated because it had an alloy mast and wasn't particularly cheap and it's still a risky buy for a boat that I doubt will beat a laser in none wiring conditions.

We have 18 boats, built or in build. We are a bit hampered by a lack of second hand boats. NZ doesn't have any either. So you have to build or buy new at the moment. Unless one comes up. We had 3 boats at Lyme Regis (hence holding the Nationals there). But one of those boats moved to Berkshire. The rest are all over. Draycote, Norwich, London, Hastings, Isle of Wight etc...

Shame, can often be all or nothing this time of year, autumnal storms or dead still and fog. Serious question because although I'm not in the market for a third boat I like your enthusiasm and trapeze boats, how many do you up and sailing now?BTW. Would Lyme Regis have been local to most or are they spread over?
