I'm pleased to announce that my new boat was delivered today! Bright yellow deck, white hull, with black spars and a sail being created by our very own Ian Morgan. Might even enter the BM...
Ok, so the white hull is green in places, the yellow deck is a little faded, the self bailer and toe straps need replacing and some minor gelcoat chips need filling, but huge thanks to the sailor who dropped the boat off on the way from Clywedog to Belgium! As some will have guessed, I have a new Minisail in my life, a MK1 Sprint, possibly. Oddly, she has never actually had fittings in the deck. I have doubts about control blocks staying in the deck, and don't really want to fit a hatch, so I'm considering the idea of making a flat "plate" fitted round the mast pot, sticking out sideways and slightly forwards to put the blocks onto. Question is, what would be light and strong enough to take the strain, as it would only be screwed down centrally? |

It depends on what the loads are I suppose. I did something very like that on my Skol Moth and used HDPE chopping board. Cleats as well as turning blocks. The turning blocks are as close to the mast as possible so the main loads are from the cleats and along the axis. Its a bit flexible, I might be tempted to use double thickness another time.

Thorpe bay yacht club mirror open in the 60s. Lady Helmsmans hulls propped up against the fence. And someone was sailing a minisail! is it very sad to be a little jealous of your new ship? probably but i dont care!

You should have said, I'd have sold you mine, I've hardly used it since I got it, too many boats.

I used a 3mm ally sheet to reinforce deck on Sprint, stuck it on with Sika-flex and peel pops, still there after several years.
I fixed all blocks to Mast bracket, no fixings into Mast, held in position by Jubilee clip. http://photobucket.com/gallery/user/aquabatdinghy/media/bWVkaWFJZDoxNDc5NzI0ODk=/?ref=1 Edited by 423zero - 02 Sep 17 at 10:15pm |

The HDPE chopping board works fine and is cheap and easy to get. We used them on our last Star to lift and reinforce the on-deck (and hugely loaded) 2:1 runner cleats and it worked just fine
