Sounds like a moneypit to me: I think you'd need to be clinically insane to want to get into that...

If anybody really wants to try an Ultra 30 (and let's face it, you'd need to be clinically dead not to!) then Ebay is your friend...

I know Tom Humphreys [Rob H son] was toying with the idea of putting a canting keel/ daggerboard arrangement on one and converting it into some sort of mini vendee thing.
He may have got as far as pulling drawings together, but it was a few years back and I've heard nothing on the subject. Why not contact Rob or Tom and see what they might have to say? Edited by OBC - 18 Dec 12 at 9:49am |

Yes, I sailed in an Ultra 30 that had no ballast in the centreboard (RM). It was fast but a complete pain when it went over. I think that we could just about stop it inverting, with all the crew on the board, but really difficult to right it without the support boat help.

Was wondering about buoyancy as keel weight was increased... does 1000kg float OK? Or to look at it from the other side, what size rig will the 350 kg at 2.4 m hold? Possibly the Cork 1720 rig is too conservative. Hyper had 120kg added since that capsize shown above.

The original board was made of softwood with GRP skin and had no ballast (it actually floated!). Changes allowed lead shot at the bottom of the standard board up to 135kg. These boats are virtually un-sailable with out serious ballast.

What does the original keel / bulb weigh? I seem to remember 1000Kg being mentioned but that might have been all-up weight.

350kg on standard board (2.4m) will not be enough to stop inversion after capsize. I have photos of Zombie inverted with that set up. I have 500kg at 2.95m draft. It does not invert and when you eventually manage to capsize it you can right it with the sails still up. Rig is very strong and does not need the runners without the kite up. Armour plated under garments ar required before you put the big kite up (2000sq ft).
What was the name of the boat you bought? Good luck. |

OK, Got the Ultra 30. It has got the most rediculously complicated rig I have ever seen. So plan is to build a new keel with 350 kg on the bulb and reinforce keel box. Hope to stick a smaller rig on for a few test sails with the racks to see how much beam we need to keep it upright. Hope it has enough buoyancy for the ballast. After that , all going well we will source a permanent mast and sails if it looks worth the investment ($$€€ big if !!). Ideally to end up with a boat looking something like the' Phuket Sports 8'.See what the guys on Zombie have done.. http://www.facebook.com/ZombieRacing Any ideas? |
